Her eyes sparkled with pride and admiration. “I have no doubt that you’ll be amazing at it,” she said sincerely. “I wish you all the luck in the world.” After my shift, I go to my interview. I walked into the building and head towards the elevators. As the elevator doors closed behind me, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness wash over me. I was on my way to interview for a position as an assistant at an investigation firm. The thought of working for such a prestigious firm with a great salary package and flexible working hours was a dream come true.

As the elevator stopped, I stepped out and looked around, trying to get my bearings. My eyes fell upon a girl exiting a room, clutching some documents. Without thinking, I approached her and said, “Excuse me, I’m here for a job interview. Can you tell me where I need to go?”

She raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by my sudden approach. “Sure,” she said, pointing to a room down the hallway. “Just go straight in.”

Heart pounding, I made my way to the room and knocked on the door. A man seated in front of a computer looked up at me and raised an eyebrow. “I’m Mia,” I said, barely managing to keep my voice steady. “I’m here for the interview.”

He motioned for me to take a seat and began asking me a series of questions. Despite my initial lack of confidence and confusion, I managed to answer them all to the best of my ability. As the interview drew to a close, he smiled and said, “Okay, I think you’re a perfect fit for our boss’s requirements. I’m currently conducting interviews with other candidates, but I’ll let you know by the end of the day. If you’re successful, full training will be provided, and you can start tomorrow.”

My heart was racing as I left the room, feeling a sense of euphoria at the possibility of getting the job. I couldn’t thank him enough and left the building with a newfound sense of purpose and determination. The prospect of starting a new chapter in my life filled me with excitement and hope for the future.

As the sun set over the sprawling city of Los Angeles, I received a message from the manager of the investigation firm I had applied to. My heart raced as I read the message – I had been selected for the position of assistant! That night, I spent hours on the phone with my friend Sarah, planning all the things I would do with the handsome salary from my new job.

The next morning, I got dressed in my best attire and did my makeup, feeling more confident and charming than ever before. Following the manager’s instructions, I headed straight to the office. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the manager, Jake, who gave me some important guidelines to keep in mind while working for the firm.

“Miss Mia, let me make it clear that our boss does not tolerate laziness. He expects all work to be done on time and with immediate effect. No excuses will be accepted if you fail to meet his expectations,” Jake said in a stern voice.

He also informed me that I would be assisting the boss directly on an ongoing case after my training was completed, but he wasn’t sure who my trainer would be. He then took me on a tour of the office, sharing more about the firm’s rules, regulations, and the boss’s strictness.

As I listened to Jake’s words, I couldn’t help but wonder who the boss was – surely someone with a fiery personality and a charming demeanor. I imagined what he might look like and wondered how I would feel working under him.

I heard the authoritative voice of Jake and instinctively looked up to greet my new boss. But what I saw left me stunned and disoriented. There, standing before me, was none other than Ethan. My mind reeled with disbelief and I felt a sudden wave of shame wash over me. If only I had known that Ethan was the boss of this prestigious investigation firm, I would never have applied, let alone accepted the job offer. In that moment, I wished nothing more than to run away and hide.

Ethan's eyes met mine as if sensing my inner turmoil, and I could see the same shock and unease reflected in his expression. Our eyes locked in a moment of mutual recognition, and I couldn’t help but wonder what he was thinking.

Silence hung heavily in the air, as I struggled to collect myself and regain my composure. My mind raced with thoughts and questions, but I remained rooted to the spot, unable to find the words to break the awkward silence.

Eventually, Ethan cleared his throat and spoke in a measured tone, “Good morning, Mia. I see that you’re my new assistant. Welcome to the team.”

Despite his attempt at cordiality, I could sense a palpable tension between us. The knowledge of our past indiscretions hung like an invisible veil between us, casting a shadow over the present moment.

As I tried to compose myself and focus on the task at hand, my mind continued to wander, pondering the implications of this awkward reunion. How would I be able to work with Ethan as my boss? Would he hold our past against me? Or would we be able to move past it and work together professionally?

The day didn’t go as planned, and my mind was filled with turmoil. I had no tasks assigned to me at the office, and the thought of facing Ethan as my boss made me uneasy. Leaving the job seemed like the best option, but then what? I had already left my job at the coffee shop, and finding another one seemed like a daunting task. While working here would give me a higher salary and time to pursue my art, the thought of working under Ethan was a hurdle I couldn’t ignore.

Why hadn’t I taken the time to investigate the owner of the firm before applying for the position? I would have saved myself the awkwardness of sitting in my chair, staring at Ethan’s door, wondering what he was thinking of having me here. I felt bard for Jack. I’m sure he could tell something was off between us. Ethan practically shut himself into his office once our introductions ended. Jake looked over at me and I gave a smile as I went to my desk.

As I weighed my options, my mind was caught in a dilemma. Should I leave the job and avoid Ethan altogether, or should I stay and work towards the luxurious lifestyle I had always dreamed of? I let out a deep sigh, my heart heavy with indecision. The day had been long, and the road ahead seemed uncertain.

ETHAN

As I satin my office, my manager Jack approached me with a request that left me taken aback. “What? What do you mean I need to train Mia? I’m not going to train her,” I exclaimed, my tone reflecting my surprise. I was astonished after discovering that Mia had successfully passed her interview, despite only knowing her as a woman working at a coffee shop. It came as a complete surprise to me that she held a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science, a new and exciting aspect about her that I was previously unaware of. Initially, we were looking for a candidate with a degree in criminology, but Jack informed me that Mia’s background in the forensic field would prove to be immensely helpful during crime scenes. According to Jack, Mia’s impressive learning skills were a valuable asset that would make her an excellent addition to our team. Moreover, she performed exceptionally well during her interview, which further cemented her suitability for the role.

Jack, always the level-headed one, calmly responded, “Boss, you know I train every new employee in our investigation firm, but this time I can’t do it. As you know, I have to attend a business meeting for the new case we’re working on.”

I nodded, understanding the predicament he found himself in. “Consider someone else for this task,” I suggested, not wanting to add any further strain to his already packed schedule.

“I can ask Luna for this task. She had already trained some of our employees when I wasn’t available. So, she has experience. But I was asking for you to train her because she has to work closely with you,” Jack reasoned, trying to convince me to take on the responsibility. As Jack and I sat in my office, I couldn’t help but reflect on our long-standing friendship. Jack had been by my side since the inception of our investigation firm, and I trusted him implicitly. Whenever I was too preoccupied with other business matters, Jack would step in and handle things on my behalf. I knew I could always count on him.

I sighed, realizing the gravity of the situation. “By engaging in training with Mia, you will foster a deeper understanding between the two of you, which could greatly benefit the progress of the case at hand. Additionally, Mia’s unique perspective and way of thinking may offer valuable insights that could help to solve the mystery. Consider emphasizing the significance of the case during your training sessions, and take on some minor cases together to enhance Mia’s skills before tackling the main one, ” Jack urged, trying to persuade me to agree to his proposal.

This particular case holds a great deal of significance to me, so much so that I opted not to delegate it to Jack due to its intricate and complex nature. Rather, I am eager to take the reins and tackle this challenge with my own team, for there is nothing quite as exhilarating as solving a mystery that others have deemed insurmountable.

After a moment’s hesitation, I relented. “Okay, I will do it,” I agreed, knowing that it was the best course of action for the firm.

Jack smiled, his relief palpable. “Thank you, boss. I knew I could count on you,” he said before leaving my office to attend to his other duties.
