“I have to go get a few things so I’m comfortable when I come back,” Erin said. “But don’t you worry. It’s only going to be for a few days. You’re going to be so busy with school, the time is going to fly by.”

“I don’t think it will,” Libby argued.

“It will,” Erin replied. “I promise it will.”

Then, to my surprise, Libby threw her arms around Erin’s waist, giving her a tight hug.

“You be a good girl and make sure you get your dolls out so we can play with them next weekend, okay?” Erin asked.

“Okay,” Libby said. “You promise you’re going to come back, right?”

“I promise,” Erin told her.

“Thanks for coming down,” I told Erin after Libby let go of her. “I appreciate you taking the time to do this.”

“Thank you for the job offer,” Erin replied. And then, to my shock once again, Erin was the one who pulled me close for a hug.

I gave her an awkward embrace, my mind going to places it really should not go as her chest was pressed against me, and I kept it brief. But, when I let go of her, she looked up and smiled into my face.

“I’ll be back in a week,” she said.

“I’ll make sure you have the ticket emailed to you tomorrow,” I told her. “Keep an eye out for that.”

“I will,” she said. “Thank you so much.”

And with one final wave, she turned and headed for the gate.

“I wish she didn’t have to go, Dad,” Libby told me. “I like her.”

“She’s coming back in a few days,” I said. “And you’ll get to spend all the time with her you want.”

“Good,” Libby replied. She turned and headed for the door, and I followed. I was a little surprised she didn’t want to watch until Erin had disappeared into the boarding section, but I was also okay with her not. I reminded myself Erin would be coming back, and I didn’t have to stress about any of that anymore.

She and Libby seemed like a really good fit for each other, and I was grateful for that.

This might have been the best idea I’ve had in a long time.

At least, I hoped so.

Chapter Eight

Erin

“Libby’sinbed,”Isaid, walking out into the living room. “She’s exhausted.”

“I’ve not seen her this happy in a long time. Thank you for that,” Neils told me.

“Oh, I’m not doing anything. Just hanging out with her.”

“Sometimes, it’s the little things that make all the difference in the world,” he said. “But how are you doing? Do you like it here?”

I sat on the couch next to him. I was dressed in my tank top and cotton pajama shorts, but it was so casual here with Neils and Libby, I didn’t feel underdressed.

“I do, I really do,” I said. “I had no idea I would fit in so well.”

“I didn’t either,” Neils said, “But I’m so glad you have.”

“Me too,” I said.
