“I just have fun,” she said. “And let things unfold as they do. There’s some drama, but for the most part, it’s not a thing. You don’t have to overthink every little thing you do, you know that, right?”

I sighed. “I’ll call you, trouble.”

She laughed. “Talk to you soon.”

After hanging up, I rolled onto my back and looked up at the ceiling. I thought about my dream for a moment longer but refused to touch myself while thinking about Neils. I couldn’t deny how much I was attracted to him, but I knew it was a terrible idea to entertain ideas of sex.

I was going down there for work, nothing else.

Chapter Nine

Neils

“Howmuchlonger?Thisis taking forever!” Libby loudly complained.

“It always takes a little while for them to get the passengers off the plane. It won’t be much longer,” I told her. “We got here after the plane landed already, so it’s not going to take long.”

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“I’m sure.”

She folded her arms and stared at the top of the escalator, clearly annoyed.

It only took a few more minutes before people started filing down, however, and she immediately brightened up.

“Here they come! Oh, where is she? Where is she? She said she would be here, she promised!” Libby cried.

“Give it a minute, pumpkin, I told you airplanes take a long time to do most everything. She’s here. She just might be closer to the back.”

“That’s rude. They should let her be in the front. Don’t they know we have somewhere to be?” Libby asked.

I laughed. “We do? Where do we have to be?”

“Home,” she said. “I got all my dolls set up and I can’t wait to show Erin. I brushed their hair, and I made sure they were all dressed in their very best. She wanted to see them, remember?”

“I remember.”

“There she is!” Libby cried, pointing to the top of the escalator. “Erin! We’re here, over here!”

She waved her arm in the air to get Erin’s attention, and Erin waved.

“She saw you,” I told my daughter. “You don’t have to keep doing that.”

“I want to make sure,” she said.

I smiled. It was nice to see Libby in this good of a mood. It had been a long time since she had done anything that reminded me of a child her age. The accident had really traumatized her, and there were plenty of times in my life I worried she had been robbed of the rest of her childhood.

But seeing Erin seemed to bring out another side of her, and that brought a smile to my face.

“Erin!” Libby cried again.

“I’m back!” Erin said when she was close enough for us to be able to hear her. “I told you I’d be back. Did you miss me?”

“Yes!” Libby ran over and jumped up, throwing her arms around Erin’s neck. Erin, for her own part, caught Libby as she jumped, and she spun her around.

“Did you miss me?” Libby asked.

“Of course, I did,” Erin told her. “I wanted to take you back with me, so I didn’t have to miss any time with you. But now I’m here, and you and I can hang out all day long if you want.”
