“Yes,” he said. “I’m going to try to get some sleep, too.”

“Alright,” I agreed. “But I’m glad you met me here. Even if it was risky.”

“There’s a lot of reward with risk,” he said with a smirk.

I gave him one last kiss before I slid off the counter and grabbed my swim bottoms, pulling them back up before heading back toward the house. I noticed Neils waited for me to get inside, then waited a few more moments before coming in himself.

I figured he was waiting to make sure no one caught us coming in together, just in case someone was up inside the house.

But, as I slipped back to my bedroom, I could hear the sounds of everyone else fast asleep.

They had no idea of the things that were going on between Neils and me, and I was okay with that. Even if I did want to come clean and go public with what we were doing, there was something about our secrecy I also found satisfying. I didn’t know what it was, but I wanted to enjoy it while it lasted.

I changed back into my pajamas and slid into bed with Krissy, glad that she didn’t wake up with all the activity going on in the room.

Then, I closed my eyes.

My heart was still pounding with excitement from what we had just done, and there was a part of me that was surprised with myself for doing it. But then, there was a lot about Neils that surprised me, and I liked the way he constantly pulled me out of my comfort zone.

I had a grin on my face as I sighed.

My life was amazing.

And it was all thanks to Neils.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Neils

Iheadedbackintothe house after sending the girls off with a wave. Rob had said goodbye to Erin while they were still inside the house, and I found it slightly odd that he hadn’t come out to wave at them with me, but I didn’t spend too much time dwelling on it.

Once I went back inside, I headed for the kitchen.

“They’re going to Fort Jefferson for the day,” I said out loud. “So, looks like it’s you and me for the next few hours old buddy. Can I get you a beer?”

“Of course,” Rob said from the other room.

I grabbed two bottles out of the fridge, then headed to the living room. “And there is plenty more where this came from, so don’t feel like you have to hold back. This is a place to cut loose and not worry.”

“Thanks, buddy,” he said as he took the beer from me. He lifted it to his lips, and I sat on the chair opposite the couch where he was sitting. He pushed Erin’s diary out of the way so he could set his beer on the coffee table, then he sat back in his chair. “It’s a nice place you’ve got here, I like the stone detailing.”

“Thanks,” I said. “I hear there was a fireplace on this wall at one point, but there hasn’t been once since I moved in, and I don’t see much need for one when we live this far south. It’s tropical all the time.”

“That’s true, but there is something to be said for how nice a fireplace looks,” Rob replied. “I’m going to always have one in my place.”

“You do have some justification for that where you live,” I told him. “North Carolina has its moments where a fireplace would be nice. But I’m pretty sure we have maybe one or two cold days in a year. I’ll live without having to deal with all that comes with a wood burning fireplace.”

“I understand that,” he said with a nod. “I can’t say I would have one down here, but then, I can’t say I would move this far south, either. I like the climate to have some change.”

“Right,” I said. “You always have been that way.”

“Some things never change,” he replied. “But then there are things that seem to change overnight.”

“Don’t I know it,” I agreed. “So how are things with you? How are you keeping yourself busy these days? What have you been up to?”

“It’s been good,” he said. “I do wood working off and on, but I haven’t gotten anything steady for a while. I don’t want to deal with the grind of clocking in and clocking out anymore, you know?”

“I agree. I’m glad I got this book on paper, but I have to say, writing a book is a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, and I’m glad to see the end. Now I get to the point where it gets launched and hits the shelves. Here’s hoping that it’s going to turn into something.”
