“I’m a wolf shifter, and you’re my mate. That mark on your palm is a symbol of our bond. It means we’re meant to be together. Forever.”

Brooklyn jumped off the bench and backed away. Either the rumors Marcus had heard were true or Kieran was a straight-up nutjob.

“Don’t run.” Kieran stood, palms out. “Please don’t run from me.”

Brooklyn narrowed his eyes. “Were you the wolf in my backyard?”

Kieran sighed. “Yes.”

Taking a shaky breath, Brooklyn lowered back down to the bench. “I-I can’t even begin to process this.”

“It’s a lot to take in.” Kieran sat beside him and took Brooklyn’s hands in his.

Brooklyn knew he should pull away, but he needed the anchor.

He glanced up at Kieran. “Are vampires real?”

“Yes.” Kieran’s jaw clenched. “They’re also our mortal enemies.”

“So you guys really are in a private war.” Brooklyn was seconds away from passing out. Marcus was right, about all of it.

Kieran nodded solemnly. “I’m sorry you had to find out like this.”

Brooklyn’s mind was reeling. He had always been a skeptic when it came to the supernatural, but now he was face-to-face with a wolf shifter. And apparently, he was the mate of said shifter. It was all so overwhelming.

“What does this mean for me?” Brooklyn asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“It means we’re meant to be together,” Kieran replied, his thumb rubbing small circles on Brooklyn’s palm. “As mates, we have a bond that can never be broken. It’s a powerful connection that goes beyond just physical attraction. It’s...something deeper.”

“And what if I don’t want this?” Brooklyn asked, pulling his hands away. “What if I don’t want to be mated to you?”

It was a legit question. Brooklyn was stunned he wasn’t running away while screaming his head off. Who in their right mind would be okay with meeting a guy, having sex with him, then being mated to him for life?

Kieran looked at him with eyes that were full of pain. “I won’t force you to be with me.”

“Don’t you dare give me puppy-dog eyes. I have every damn right to be confused and angry but also lusting after you.”

The guy’s grin didn’t bode well for Brooklyn. It was full of dirty promises and pleasurable nights. “But you have to admit, the latter option does sound tempting,” Kieran said with a smirk.

Brooklyn rolled his eyes but couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at the corners of his mouth. Despite the absurdity of the situation, he couldn’t deny the attraction he felt toward Kieran.

“I’m serious, Kieran,” Brooklyn said, his voice firm. “I need time to process all of this. I can’t just jump into being your mate. I don’t even know you.”

“I understand.” Kieran’s expression softened. “I won’t rush you. Take all the time you need.”

They sat in silence for a few minutes, both lost in their own thoughts. Brooklyn couldn’t believe how drastically his life had changed since meeting Kieran. Hell, even before that if he was being honest with himself. It had changed the moment he’d decided to leave Blain, and it hadn’t slowed down since.

But as scary and overwhelming as it all was, a part of him was excited about the prospect of a supernatural world existing.

“I’m Felix. You have to be freaking out over this.”

“Understatement of the year,” Brooklyn muttered. Kieran was glad his mate had agreed to come home with him and meet his pack. He thought he’d have to wait months before that happened.

Felix chuckled. “I don’t blame you. Finding out about the supernatural world can be a lot to take in. But you’ll get used to it. They’re not so different from us regular humans, you know.”

Brooklyn raised an eyebrow. “Except for the whole shapeshifting thing.”
