“Right,” Felix said with a grin. “That’s the fun part.”

Kieran wrapped an arm around Brooklyn’s waist, pulling him closer. It was clear that his mate was still struggling to come to terms with everything, but Kieran was determined to show him that being a shifter’s mate wasn’t so bad. “Don’t worry, love. You’ll be safe with me and my pack.”

Brooklyn pulled out of Kieran’s arm and slapped repeatedly at his shoulder. “I’m not ready to get all cozy with you, bub. Did you know what would happen when we were together at the club? If you did, why didn’t you forewarn me? Why’d you walk away and let me discover this mark on my own?”

“Those...are damn good questions.”

“They don’t know who their mate is until they sleep with them.” Felix held up his hand to show Brooklyn his palm. “Imagine my surprise when this appeared.”

“It’s different from mine.” Brooklyn showed his mark to Felix.

“All mating bonds are different,” Kieran said. “And to answer your multitude of questions, finding my mate was the last thing on my mind when we met.”

“That’s because you don’t know how to keep it in your pants,” Cyrus said as he strolled into the room. “So this is the guy you had us scouring the city for.”

Brooklyn looked uneasily at Kieran.

“I wasn’t stalking you,” Kieran said to his mate. “I just had no idea how to find you.” He turned to Cyrus. “Learn how to shut your trap once in a while.”

“Just don’t get between Kieran and his apple pie,” Felix whispered to Brooklyn, but Brooklyn was still eyeing Kieran warily.

Was searching for his mate that disturbing? Humans did that all the time, only they used social media, which Kieran wished he’d thought about, but considering he still didn’t know his mate’s last name, that might not have worked for him.

“Let’s go drink wine and talk shit about thickheaded men.” Felix grabbed Brooklyn’s hand and led him away.

As soon as they were gone, Kieran punched Cyrus in the arm.

“Ow! What was that for?”

“For being a complete idiot.” Now Kieran had to smooth things over with Brooklyn before his mate got the wrong idea. He wasn’t some crazed stalker, even though his behavior may have suggested so.

Goddamn Cyrus and his big mouth.

Chapter Five

Brooklyn sipped his glass of red wine as Felix ranted about some drama within the pack. He was trying his best to fit in with Kieran’s world, but it was all so foreign to him. He couldn’t believe that he was surrounded by supernatural beings who could shift into animals and vampires who thirsted for blood. It was like something out of a fantasy novel.

His mind was spinning with all the new information he had learned.

“Are you all right?” Felix asked, his eyes full of concern.

Brooklyn nodded, taking another sip of his wine. “Just trying to process everything.”

“It’s a lot to take in,” Felix said sympathetically. “But you’ll get used to it. And besides, Kieran is a good guy. He’ll take care of you.”

Brooklyn smiled faintly. “Yeah, he seems like it.”

“Can I see your mark again?” Felix asked.

Brooklyn nodded and lifted his hand to show his palm. Felix traced the intricate design, then lifted his own palm and placed it next to Brooklyn’s.

“They’re almost alike, but there are tiny variations. I was dumbfounded when mine burned into my hand,” Felix said. “But I have to admit the mating symbol is beautiful.”

Brooklyn wouldn’t deny that the mark was lovely. “It is,” he agreed, studying the intricate lines and curves. “But it’s also a little terrifying, you know? The idea of being mated to someone for life.”

Felix nodded understandingly. “I can imagine. But you and Kieran have a connection that goes beyond just physical attraction. You’re meant to be together.”

Brooklyn sighed, taking another sip of his wine. “I guess I just need time to adjust. This is...I don’t even have words for this.”
