“Was one of them the guy who attacked Brooklyn?” Logan wiped at his busted lip.

“Unfortunately, no.” Kieran headed for the exit, anxious to see his mate. “That doesn’t mean I’m giving up. We’re just calling it a night.”

Logan followed him outside. “Let me know if you need me again. I like Brooklyn, and I’ll help you track the bastard responsible.”

They gave each other a quick man-hug before Kieran headed to Brooklyn’s apartment.

Chapter Eight

“How many times has he texted you?” Marcus lounged back on Brooklyn’s couch, his feet tucked under his small frame, his glass of wine still in his hand.

“Three now.” Brooklyn was fed up with Blaine. It was all just an act for him, and now he was trying to harass Brooklyn for no real reason. If Blaine had truly cared about their relationship, he wouldn’t have been unfaithful.

“Give me the phone and I’ll text him.” Marcus wiggled his fingers. Brooklyn saw the guy’s flushed cheeks and bright eyes. He was a bit tipsy.

“No, I’ll do it. If anyone gets to tell him off, it’s me.” He sat there and considered what he was going to say. What did you text to someone who had broken your heart repeatedly? It hadn’t been just the cheating. Blaine loved to argue, loved to point out all of Brooklyn’s faults, and there hadn’t been any romantic feelings between them for a while now.

There were only two words Brooklyn could think of that summarized everything. Drop dead.

He set his phone aside after he sent the text.

“That wasn’t nearly enough words,” Marcus said. “I would have ripped into him.”

Brooklyn shrugged. “It wouldn’t have done any good. Blaine is all about himself, and putting any kind of real emotion into a text would have been useless. I’d rather put that energy into more important things.”

“Like your wolf.” Marcus wiggled his brows, making Brooklyn laugh.

“Like my wolf.” Maybe it was the wine talking, but Brooklyn wanted to give Kieran a chance. He was looking for something different from Blaine. A meaningful relationship with someone dependable and loyal. Someone who’d always be there for him. A real connection.

“Am I going too fast?” Brooklyn set his wine aside and turned to face Marcus. “I just had a bad breakup, and now I’m jumping into something else. Should I take time for myself?”

“Honey, when you find the right one, there’s no use pumping the brakes. How does Kieran make you feel?”

“Like I’m walking on sunshine,” Brooklyn admitted. “The air is fresh and full of promise and hope, like a sweet dream that hasn’t yet been dreamed. I’m happy, feel wanted, and I can’t wait to see him or hear his voice.” He sighed. “I think it’s the wine talking.”

Marcus was simply staring at him.

“What?” Brooklyn asked.

“Why can’t I find a guy to make me feel that way? How did you get so lucky?” Marcus tossed a throw pillow at Brooklyn. “I’m so jealous.”

“But his world is terrifying,” Brooklyn said. “I was attacked and almost killed by a vampire. There’s a private war going on, Marcus. I don’t know if I can handle that.”

“How are wolves and vampires different from humans?” Marcus asked. “And don’t give me an obvious answer. I mean there are terrible humans out there, Brooklyn. Humans who take advantage of others, who bully and terrorize, who do horrible things. You realize we have around two thousand active serial killers in our country right now?” Marcus shuddered. “I would rather a vampire bite me than one of those psychos coming close to me.”

Brooklyn’s jaw dropped. “I didn’t need to know that. Who knows that kind of thing?”

“I watch too much television,” Marcus admitted.

They jumped when someone knocked on the door. Brooklyn looked at his friend, and Marcus gazed wide-eyed at him. “Do you think it’s one of those serial killers you mentioned?” Brooklyn asked.

“If it is, you answer the door.” Marcus downed the rest of his wine. “I’m too young to die.”

“So am I,” Brooklyn argued. He got up and looked out his peephole then grinned. “I’m going to let him in and tell him you’d be his perfect victim.”

“Don’t you dare!” Marcus squeaked.

“Calm down.” Brooklyn chuckled as he swung the door open. At the sight of Kieran, his body reacted immediately. He was tall, handsome, and his lips were curled into a mischievous grin that made Brooklyn’s heart race. He wanted to soak in every inch of him, letting Kieran consume him entirely.
