“This is different,” Rayne growled. “I don’t want them on my property.”

Eleazar’s jaw clenched. “Understand this. As long as Felix is here, you will have my protection as well.”

Rayne shook his head, his tone adamant. “I don’t want your protection.”

Eleazar gave him a curt nod. “We will see how long you can handle things on your own. But be warned. Felix is like a son to me. If anything happens to him, Fayez will be the least of your worries.”

Before Rayne could reply, Eleazar and his men disappeared into the woods. Rayne’s hackles rose as he watched them go. He knew Eleazar was a powerful vampire, but fuck that bastard.

“We need to keep a close eye on things,” he said to his pack. “And we need to do it fast. I don’t want to be unprepared if Fayez tries to attack again.”

“Fayez just left his dead,” Cable said. “What do you want us to do with them?”

“Bury them somewhere far away from here.” Rayne headed inside.

Eleazar sat behind his desk, looking out the window at the darkness. When he’d sent Felix to investigate the disappearances, he had no idea this would happen. If he had, he never would have sent the human out there. He hadn’t been kidding when he’d told Rayne that Felix was like a son to him. If only Rayne knew just how much Felix really did mean to Eleazar. The boy reminded him of the son he’d lost. He had the same sassiness and innocence.

Now Rayne had made an enemy of Fayez. It was a foolish move, but Eleazar couldn’t deny that he admired Rayne’s stubbornness and conviction. He was strong-willed, and Eleazar could see the potential for greatness in the wolf if only Rayne would learn how to control his emotions. But Fayez was not to be trifled with. If Rayne wasn’t careful, he would find himself on the wrong side of a war he couldn’t win.

Eleazar leaned back in his chair, his fingers steepled under his chin. He needed to keep an eye on Rayne and his pack, to make sure they didn’t do anything else foolish. He also needed to find a way to take care of Fayez once and for all.

But how? Eleazar had been alive for over six centuries, and he had seen and done things that would make the heads of most mortals spin. But he couldn’t think of a solution to this problem. Fayez was almost as ancient as Eleazar, and he had many loyal followers.

Even the rogue vampires who lived in the city, who had no allegiance to either coven, tended to lean more toward Fayez when the two clashed.

Eleazar sighed. He had hoped to keep the peace between the vampires and werewolves in the city, but Fayez was making it impossible. Eleazar knew Rayne was a strong alpha, but he couldn’t trust the hunter to handle this on his own.

He decided to call an old friend. One who owed him big time.

Eleazar picked up his phone and dialed a number he hadn’t used in years. It rang once, twice, then someone picked up. No one knew that Eleazar knew a lethal hunter. His coven would kill him if they ever found out. They already weren’t happy defending hunters and had voiced their displeasure to him.

“Hello?” The voice on the other end was deep and raspy.

“Luka,” Eleazar said, his voice flat. “It’s been a while.”

“Eleazar.” Luka’s tone was wary. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I need your help,” Eleazar said, getting straight to the point. “I have a situation with a troublesome vampire who won’t back down. I need him taken care of.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line. Eleazar could almost hear Luka thinking.

“Who is this vampire?” Luka finally asked.

“His name is Fayez. He’s been causing trouble with the wolf pack in the city,” he explained.

“Ah, I see.” Luka’s voice was laced with amusement. “I’ve heard of him before. He’s been causing many problems for the vampire community as well.”

“Then you know he needs to be dealt with,” Eleazar said, his voice firm.

“I can help you,” Luka said. “But it won’t be cheap.”

“I’ll pay your price. I need you to take care of Fayez,” Eleazar said. “Permanently.”

“Very well,” Luka said. “Consider it done.”

“Thank you.”
