Felix opened the door to his room, and Rayne stepped inside. The room was tastefully decorated, with earthy tones and soft lighting that created a warm and inviting atmosphere. It was clear that Felix had put a lot of effort into making his room his own, which was a far cry from the rest of the sterile house.

Rayne lingered by the door, still feeling uneasy. There wasn’t anything immediately suspicious in the room, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to jump off. Logan and Cable were close by in case Rayne needed them, but Rayne hoped this trip was uneventful.

“You have a very nice room,” Rayne said as he stepped inside and closed the door behind him. “Very inviting.”

“Thanks.” Felix beamed before he went to a large closet and pulled out a gym bag. “It’s taken me years to get it the way I wanted it.”

He walked to his dresser and started pulling clothes out. Rayne watched as Felix folded his clothes neatly and placed them in the bag. The way Felix moved, his slim muscles flexing, his body moving with grace, was mesmerizing. Rayne couldn’t help but want to touch him, to feel him beneath his fingertips. But he knew he had to keep his wolf in check. This was not the time or the place.

Rayne noticed a book on the bedside table and picked it up, scanning the title. It was a book on vampire history. “Interesting choice of reading material,” Rayne commented, flipping through the pages. “You’re not planning on joining the enemy, are you?”

Felix laughed nervously. “You know that’s not possible. Humans can’t be converted into vampires. I just find their history fascinating. It’s like reading about a different world.”

Rayne raised an eyebrow but set the book down. “Well, let’s get out of here before my wolf takes over and I burn this place to the ground.”

“You better not,” Felix said, zipping up his gym bag. “You might hate all vampires, but there are a few under this roof that I’m fond of.”

Rayne rested his hand on the bedroom doorknob. “I won’t hold that against you.”

Before he could open the door, there was a sudden commotion on the other side. Rayne tensed, his hand going to his gun, ready for anything. He could hear voices shouting in the hallway and the sounds of a scuffle.

Felix’s eyes were wide. “What the hell?”

“Move behind me,” Rayne demanded as he watched the door. He had no idea what was going on, but his gut told him that his earlier feeling of trouble brewing had just begun.

The door flew open, and Rayne saw men lying on the floor in the hallway. It looked as if their throats had been torn out. But Rayne’s attention was drawn to the guy standing there, with shiny black hair that fell in gentle waves around his forehead and ears. He was tall, with broad shoulders and an athletic build. When he looked at Rayne, his dark eyes sparkled like diamonds cast against a dark sky. Rayne was momentarily stunned by the stranger’s beauty, and for a second, he forgot why he was even there.

“Zakrem.” Felix said the name with distaste.

“Who?” Rayne asked, tearing his gaze away from the vampire.

“Eleazar’s brother.” Felix moved from behind Rayne, but when Rayne tried to shove his mate back, Felix stepped around his arm. “He loathes the power Eleazar has and wants it for himself. He also doesn’t give a damn about human life.”

The air around Zakrem was thick with his scent, and when Rayne breathed it in, he suddenly remembered where he had smelled it before—the building where humans were locked up like animals. “It’s you who’s been killing the humans,” he snarled.

Felix inhaled sharply. “I should have known it was you all along.”

“You always were dim-witted,” Zakrem said. “I have no idea why my brother insisted on keeping you around like a pet.”

Where was Eleazar? He must have heard the commotion, and one would expect him to come and see what was causing it all. He should be checking to make sure Rayne wasn’t responsible, especially since Eleazar didn’t trust Rayne in his home.

Did he know his brother was the one killing the humans? Rayne didn’t trust a single vampire, but would Eleazar allow his brother to slaughter so many human lives considering he cared so deeply for Felix?

“I’m sure you’d never understand,” Felix spat. “You’d need a heart first.”

Rayne let out a menacing growl as Zakrem moved closer. Then four men entered the space after the vampire had stepped aside. Rayne had never faced off with five vampires before, not by himself, but he was not about to let anyone near Felix.

He pulled out his gun and aimed it directly at Zakrem’s chest. The vampire didn’t even flinch, and instead, he let out a mocking laugh. “You think that toy is going to stop me, hunter?”

Rayne didn’t respond, but his finger twitched on the trigger. He couldn’t let Zakrem get any closer to Felix. He was prepared to shoot if necessary. The silver bullets would be effective against the vampires, but he wasn’t sure if he could kill all of them before they attacked.

“Stay behind me,” Rayne ordered Felix, taking a step forward.

The vampires moved in unison, circling him as they closed in. Rayne was outnumbered, but he refused to back down. He had faced worse odds in his life and had survived.

Fangs bared, the first vampire lunged at him. Rayne dodged the attack, his gun pointed at the creature’s head. He squeezed the trigger, and the sound of the gunshot echoed through the room.

The vampire fell to the ground, dead.
