“The vampires,” Rayne said.

Felix didn’t know what to think. He had always known that Eleazar and his kind were dangerous, but he had never thought they would do something like this. Vampires fed from their victims. They didn’t kill them. That would draw too much attention their way, and since their kind, and wolf shifters, wanted to keep their existence hidden, it wasn’t very smart if vampires were really behind this.

“Why do you think vampires are doing this?” Felix asked.

Rayne shrugged. “Who knows? Maybe it’s some kind of power play. Or maybe they just like killing humans for fun. Either way, the vampires in Ridgeway are getting sloppy, and it’s causing a lot of problems for everyone.”

Felix felt sick to his stomach. “What can we do to stop them?”

This was where he would find out what the hunters planned. That was if Rayne answered him.

Rayne gave him a small smile. “We? Are you offering to help me?”

Felix shrugged. “I don’t have much of a choice, do I? Besides, I don’t want innocent people to get hurt.”

If the guy spelled out his plan, Felix would find an excuse to bounce. Then he would hurry home and tell Eleazar what he’d discovered. Job well done. No more combing the seedy streets. He might even be home in time to watch his favorite show.

Rayne nodded. “Good. We’ll start by gathering intel. I have a safe house nearby where we can plan our next move.”

Felix followed Rayne, trying to keep his wits about him. He couldn’t believe he was actually teaming up with a hunter, but desperate times called for desperate measures. If he was going to find out what the hunters were up to, he had to put his trust in someone he barely knew.

As they walked, Felix couldn’t help but feel a growing sense of paranoia. He kept looking over his shoulder, half expecting a group of vampires to jump out at him at any moment. He quickened his pace, wanting to get to the safe house as soon as possible. Rayne seemed to sense his urgency and didn’t object.

Eleazar might have put out the word that Felix wasn’t to be harmed, but that didn’t mean vampires would listen. The ones on the street weren’t part of Eleazar’s coven. They had less at stake by messing with Felix.

This was why he did all his errands during the day. Screw the night and its shady-ass people.

As they arrived at the safe house, Felix’s heart was ready to give out. He was in too deep now and couldn’t back out. What in the hell was he doing? He wasn’t a warrior, he didn’t make plans of attack, and he definitely didn’t team up with a hunter just to gather intel.

Felix also didn’t want anything to happen to Eleazar. The guy was like a father to him since Felix’s dad had passed away a few years ago. He missed his father desperately. Jack Ramin had been the best dad, and although Eleazar was good to Felix, took care of him and made sure he was well compensated for his services, no one could replace his dad.

Felix took in the two-story brick house with a wide view of Ridgeway, accented with creeping vines along the exterior walls. The interior was nothing like Felix had expected after he’d followed Rayne inside. The spacious living room had been expertly arranged with comfortable couches and a large television, its light sparkling off the polished wood of the mantelpiece.

Eleazar’s home, however, was stone floors and glassy surfaces buffed to perfection. When Eleazar pissed him off, Felix walked around leaving his handprints everywhere, knowing that would drive the man batty.

Rayne closed the door behind them then locked it with a state-of-the-art keypad.

“Is that necessary?” The tingle of fear ignited Felix’s stomach and solidified into dread.

“It is when you’re now my prisoner.”

“I knew I shouldn’t have trusted you!” Felix cried.

“What you should have trusted was your instincts,” Rayne said, his expression cold.

Felix’s heart sank as he realized he had made a huge mistake. He had put his trust in the wrong person, and now he was paying the price. So much for Rayne sharing information. He’d set Felix up, and Felix, thinking himself smart enough to get that intel, had fallen into the trap.

“Tell me everything you know about those bloodsuckers.”

“I don’t know a damn thing. I swear.”

Rayne moved closer to him, his hazel eyes flashing with anger. “You expect me to believe that? You work for a vampire, Felix. You must know something about the disappearances.”

Felix shook his head. “I swear I don’t know anything. Eleazar just told me to find out what’s been happening in the city.”

Rayne studied Felix carefully. “I find that hard to believe. You’ve been working for Eleazar for how long and you don’t know anything about the vampires in Ridgeway?” He grabbed Felix by the collar of his shirt and pushed him against the wall. “Don’t lie to me. I can smell the fear on you.”

Felix closed his eyes, trying to steady his breathing. He couldn’t let this hunter intimidate him. He had to stay strong.
