My attention shoots straight to him, and my eyes meet his green ones. I clutch my stomach and swallow without saying a word.

He doesn’t stop for my reply. “I did some research and got in touch with organizations I know through the force.” He turns, opens the nightstand on his side, and eases a folder from inside it. “Here’s a list of babies in need of adoption. There are other options, Chloe,so manyother options, and I will be by your side on any path you go on.”

I cover my mouth, my hands shaking as I open the green folder, and tears glisten in my eyes. “You did all this … for me?”

“Yes, because I love you more than I’ve loved anyone in my life. You own every part of me, and I’d love nothing more than to create a family with you, a life with you, with us turning old and gray together. I want us to live together, so I can always say my good mornings fromourbed.”

The tears fall, landing on the paperwork on the folder, and I set it aside to curl into his arms. “Thank you, Kyle. You are everything to me. I never believed in love, never thought I’d have it, until you barreled through my insecurities.”

He kisses the top of my head, my nose, before tilting my chin up to kiss me on the lips. “Also, let me know when you’re ready to be my wife.” He winks. “They say it makes itmucheasier to adopt when you’re married.”

I grin and shuffle through the folder. “Get me a folder with a marriage license to sign, and I’m game.”

Prologue

I jump out of my car, the menacing downpour coming at me sideways, and sprint into a home I frequent more than my own.

Her door is unlocked.

No shocker.

She’s expecting me.

My shoes squeak against the wood floor as I charge down the hall and find her in the bedroom. She’s parked on the edge of the bed, her frail body motionless, while a dangerous storm brews in her ice-cold blue eyes.

Eyes pointed in my direction.

“Where is he?” I scream. My voice cracks at her detached facade.

“Gage.” Her tone is calm. Controlled. Not what any sane person would have in this situation. “Let me explain.”

“What did you do, Missy?” My voice grows louder, angrier, more venom flowing with every sharp, nervous word spit out. “What the fuck did you do?”

“It’s all your fault, you know,” she fires back. “If you had loved me right, none of this would’ve happened!”

“You did this out of spite for me?”

I move closer at the sound of sirens in the background. Determination thrums through me to get to her before they do, and I drop to my knees, prepared to plead if need be.

“Where is he?” I stress, tears biting at my eyes.

Her smile is wicked. “You’ll never know.” Those four words kill me yet satisfy her as she sings them out.

Seconds later, footsteps grow louder, and the police start filing in.

“Be prepared to rot in a cell for the rest of your life,” are the final words I say before they haul her away.

Chapter One

Four Months Later

“I didn’t set my apartment on fire!”

At least, I don’t think I did.
