“Didn’t know my girls would be here tonight,” Grinny says.

I recognize one of the “girls” and grin at her as she stares back at me. She’s the one who dusted me off at the bakery, but she seems like the hardest one to win over in the group.

“This is Helen,” Grinny says, taking her hand and bringing her closer.

“Hello,” Helen says. No smile, no expression, nohey, I remember you.

“Good to see you, Helen.”

“And I’m Peg,” Peg says, putting her hand on my arm as she smiles up at me. Next thing I know, she’s squeezing my bicep. “My goodness, the muscle on you,” she coos. “Helen, feel this.”

“He’s not a wax figure, Peg. He’s a human being,” Grinny tuts.

“Well, I know. I’m feeling him right now, flesh and bone,” Peg practically purrs.

She lowers her lids and sends me a flirty smile. She’s a pretty lady, and I can imagine that look has worked its magic plenty.

I hear Scarlett snorting and know I’ll lose it if I look at her.

“And look at how tall he is…I’d say around…“ Peg leans her head back and taps her upper lip with her finger. “6’3 and a half?”

I nod, impressed. “I think that’s about right.”

“Oh, for goodness’ sake, you act like you’ve never seen a man before,” Helen says.

“I think I just proved that I have.” Peg winks at me and pats my arm again. “And he obviously takes after his father.” She winks at Pappy.

Helen rolls her eyes. “Oh, for goodness’ sake,” she repeats under her breath.

“Grandfather,” Pappy says, mortified.

We’re saved when a voice erupts from a microphone.

“Jamison Ledgerrrrr! Come on up!”

I turn toward the stage and a guy I’ve seen at Happy Cow a few times is waving me up. Scarlett is wiping her eyes when I glance at her.

“Something funny?” I ask straight-faced.

She presses her lips together. “Can’t remember when I’ve laughed so hard…wait…in your office.”

I suck in a breath, remembering her naked in my office trying to get her clothes back on and tug my collar, suddenly needing air.

They call my name again into the microphone.

“What did you do?”

She lifts a shoulder. “You sounded awfully excited about karaoke. Didn’t think you’d mind.”

I put my hand on her waist and her breath catches, making me way too excited for my own good.

“Okay,” I say, pretending to be more nervous than I am.

I let out a long whoosh of air and inhale, my nostrils flaring. She giggles again and I point at her.

“You’re trouble, aren’t ya?”

She smirks and again with the shoulder lift.
