Tears blur my eyes and I have to close them a minute because of the sting.

“With anyone else at that age, I would have said to maybe wait a while…what was the rush? But with the two of you, I just knew it was a lifetime kind of love.” Her lips tremble and she presses them together.

I reach out and take her hand, wiping my face with the other. “Itwasa lifetime kind of love. At least for me. I’ve never stopped loving him.”

She squeezes my hand and then pats my leg before picking up the fruit tart again. “Well, it’s a good thing you’re here now then. You’ve got some work to do, and I told him I wouldn’t interfere, so…” She nods and tilts her head toward me likego on.

“You-you really think I still have a chance with him?”

“Child, that boy has done the best he could with the cards he’s been dealt, and I am so proud of him. But he was crushed when you left, and he’s having a hard time with you being back. That tells me what I’ve always known.”

“What?” I ask when she doesn’t say anything right away.

“That he has never stopped loving you either.”

CHAPTEREIGHT

PORN

THEO

Sofie’s words haunt me.

My love for you is what made me think I could make Landmark my home again.

What could she possibly have meant by that?

And the wholeI’m not going anywhere this time, and there’s no way I could ever pretend you don’t existbullshit, making it almost sound as if she still cares.

It’s been a busy week. I’ve delivered three foals and a calf and had to put down a cow and a goat, which is never easy to do. It’s not like I haven’t had plenty to occupy my mind, and yet, every second of the day feels like I’m hearing her voice in my head saying those words.

And what’s worse are the nights.

It’s like a porn that never stops rolling, the way I’m envisioning her naked everywhere, us having sex all over my house. My bed. The shower. The deck. On the table. The countertop. The floor. By the lake. The laundry room.

I’m drilling her from the back, my hands on her hips as she looks over her shoulder at me. Against the wall, her legs wrapped around my waist. She’s on top when we’re in bed, and I flip her onto her back or sit up chest to chest with her.

I can hear her cries, the way she sounds when she’s close, I can practically feel her coming around me. Some are scenes from the past and some are imagined, but they all feel so real.

When I wake up, I’m sweating and already have my dick in my hands, desperately chasing relief.

It’s a wonder I’ve been able to get anything done. I’m deep down tired and so tempted to cancel on our family dinner again, but I just can’t do that to Grinny. And I’m missing everyone anyway.

I show up a little bit early, thinking if I can spend some extra time with Grinny, I can cut out a bit early. Tomorrow’s Sunday, which is normally my day off, but there’s a town meeting in the morning about the Fourth of July parade happening in a few weeks that I have to attend.

“There you are,” Grinny cries, her eyes shining. “Get over here and let me hug you. And don’t you ever stay away this long again.”

“I saw you this week,” I remind her.

“I know it, but breakfast at Sunny Side is just not the same as our family dinners.”

Sunny Side, the family restaurant that’s one of my favorites, is a place I usually hit at least once a week, but I’ve stayed closer to home lately. And I’m surprised Lar and Mar haven’t knocked my door down yet with me not stopping by Happy Cow in so long.

“You’re right.” I kiss her cheek and follow her to the kitchen.

She’s already got cornbread and her specialty, homemade mac and cheese, in the oven. The fryer is ready to go and Grinny stands at the counter, dipping huge pieces of fish in batter.

“Mm-mm, looks so good. You made my favorite meal.”
