Love you.

Sof

I’ve cleared my schedule to help Sofie this morning and there aren’t any calls, so I get ready and head over to her place. She’s in front of the stables when I pull up, and I don’t realize just how tense I’ve been until she smiles at me.

“Hey,” she says.

I run my hands through my hair as Fred jumps out of the truck, and I try to play it cool.

Just because last night was the first night we haven’t had sex since we got back together and she left before I got up is nothing to be concerned about.

Time to stop being such a pussy, Landmark.

“Morning,” I say, smiling as she leans up to kiss me. “Missed you when I woke up.”

Her hand lingers on my cheek. “I missed you too. Sorry, I was restless.”

She drops back down on her feet, her hands gripping my shirt. I lean my forehead against hers.

“You’ll tell me if all of this is too much?” I ask.

She leans back and nods slowly. “Sometimes I feel guilty about what a liar I was,” she whispers. “What a liar I still am with all these secrets about my family.”

Her fists tighten around my shirt as she lets out a shaky breath.

“You’re not a liar. You were trying to survive,” I tell her.

She loosens her grip and wipes her eyes, turning before I’m ready to let her go.

“Can we work upstairs while you’re with me?” She starts walking toward my truck and I follow her. “I don’t think I can do it alone.”

“Of course.”

We get in the truck, and I drive to the house. Before we get out of the truck, I put my hand on her arm.

“You know you can tell me anything, right? You don’t have to carry any of this alone anymore. I’m here.”

Her teeth press on her full lower lip before she nods, her eyes shiny with emotion.

“That means everything.” She reaches back and takes my hand, our fingers weaving together. “I had no reason to believe you’d give me another chance when I decided to come back, but just knowing you’d be close by gave me the strength to be here.”

“I’ll do whatever it takes for you to be okay,” I tell her. “Go to therapy, leave Landmark…I mean it. Anything…”

“I don’t want my father to win anymore. Even in death, he’s still controlling me.” Her voice cracks and it kills me.

But in the next second, her jaw clenches and the look in her eyes turns steely. My heartbeat quickens when she leans toward me.

“Let’s. Do. This.” Her every word is accentuated with a poke into my chest.

I lean down and pretend to bite her finger, grinning when she swats me away.

“Hell yeah, let’s do this.”

We get out of the truck, slamming the doors and I follow her to the house, ready to take on whatever is ahead.
