She lifts up on her tiptoes, her arms wrapping around my neck as she kisses me.

“I love you,” she whispers before turning and walking away. “The largest shake Jo makes, pretty please,” she calls.

I grin and follow her out, securing the gate behind me. She’s down the driveway before I start the truck, and I can’t get out of here fast enough, the ghosts of this place too vivid in my imagination now to ignore.

The trip to Sunny Side doesn’t take too long, but I’m anxious to get back to Sofie. I don’t want her to be by herself right now. I pull into my driveway and am grabbing our food right as my work cell rings.

I’d hoped to not have any issues come up with work today, but emergencies don’t wait for a convenient time. I’m still on the phone when I rush inside, handing Sofie her shake and setting the bag of food on the counter.

Once I’m off the phone, I sag against the counter and curse under my breath.

“What’s wrong?” she asks.

“I’m so sorry. I’ve gotta run to the Albertson place. It’s about forty-five minutes out and most of the vets are at a convention I skipped this week.”

She frowns. “Why are you apologizing?”

“The last thing I want to do is leave you right now. Do you want to go with me?”

She puts her hands on my hips, her toes bumping into my shoes. “Why? I’m okay. I feel better than okay, actually.” She leans up to kiss me. “Go. I’ll stay here and go through the boxes so there’s not a mess. Or is there time for me to get the boxes from your truck?”

My hand brushes across her cheek as I stare at her, trying to assess if she’s telling me the truth. “I know that couldn’t have been easy, talking about everything. The timing sucks.”

She grabs the bag and pulls her food out before handing me the bag. “I’ve needed the truth to be out for a long time. I thought it would be harder than it was, but keeping it inside…” She puts her hand on her chest and winces. “I think that’s been more destructive than anything.”

“Thank you for trusting me with it,” I whisper.

I get lost in her big blue eyes and the way they shine.

“There’s never been a day I haven’t trusted you, Theo. That’s never been the problem.”

I kiss her one more time and groan when I pull away. I want to sink into her and drown inside of her.

“Tonight. Take a nap and rest up. I plan to be as deep inside of you as I can get…all night long.”

Her cheeks flush as she presses her lips together. “Okay,” she says softly.

I reach out and tweak one of her nipples and love the air that hisses from her lips.

She takes a step back and points at the door. “Go take care of whatever animal needs your help before I lose all my willpower.”

I groan again as Fred and I walk to the door, looking back at her. She surprises me by reaching into her pocket and throwing me her keys.

“Why don’t you leave the truck and take my SUV? I’ll deal with the boxes. Go.” She shoos me out of the door.

Nothing goes as planned.

It’s after midnight before I get back to Landmark.

Things were a disaster at Bill Albertson’s place. After a complicated and lengthy delivery, the foal survived, but the mare did not. I fucking hate losing an animal. It just never gets any easier. My phone died somewhere along the way and since I wasn’t in my truck and left in a rush, I didn’t have my charger with me.

My nerves are shot to hell from this fucking day, and I’ve wanted nothing more than to be with my girl, making sure she’s truly okay. I speed the whole way home and when I pull into my driveway, it’s the first time since I kissed her in my kitchen earlier that I finally breathe a long sigh of relief.

The house is dark when Fred and I walk in, and I turn on a light, surprised that there isn’t a single box in sight.

She must have gotten a ton done if they’re already out of the way.
