CHAPTERTHIRTY-SEVEN

TIPTOE THROUGH THE SNIFFLES

SOFIE

I searched the school and couldn’t find Theo, so I texted him to let him know I’d meet him at his truck as soon as I was done with the yearbook meeting. When I hurried outside, mumbling under my breath about how long the meeting lasted and for no good reason, I paused mid-step when I saw him leaning against his truck holding a huge bouquet of pink tulips. My foul mood forgotten, I couldn’t stop smiling as I rushed toward him.

“What have you been up to?” I asked.

He held the flowers out for me and I took them, unable to contain the grin taking over my face.

“Trying to pass the time until you got out here,” he said.

“I like the way you pass the time.” I shifted the flowers to one hand and moved in as close as I could get to him. “These are beautiful. Thank you.”

His forehead touched mine and my heart galloped ahead. When we got close like this, I got an overwhelming desire to swallow him whole or bury myself under his skin…things that sounded crazy no matter how much I loved him. Things I couldn’t admit out loud because as confident as I was about his feelings for me, I still had moments where I thought saying howextremely muchI wanted him had the potential of making him bolt.

Because every other single guy we knew who was our age, or younger, or older…and even some of the married ones…hadn’t stayed in their relationships.

Not one single couple in our junior class had dated for longer than six months. And Theo and I had been going strong for years. I liked to think I kept part of myself a mystery to Theo, despite him knowing almost everything about me, I tried to keep him guessing and curious and interested…but he was the one who always did the romantic gestures.

“Are you trying to get on my good side?” I asked, my hands sinking into his thick hair.

“Aren’t I already on your good side?” he teased.

“Always…but this bumps you up even higher.”

He lifted an eyebrow, and I could tell by the heat in his eyes that he was going to take it someplace dirty. My heart tumbled over itself in anticipation.

“How can I bumpyouup even higher?” he whispered, and I shivered.

Simple, but effective.

His smirk was cocky, like he knew exactly how his words and the look affected me, but instead of it feeling like he was winning, it felt like I was. He turned my legs into liquid and made my core constantly greedy for more of him.

“You know exactly how to bump me up,” I said, laughing.

His laugh sounded raspy before his lips brushed across mine.

“Yeah?” he said, his tongue dipping in for a taste.

“You barely look at me and I turn into mush,” I admitted and then made a face.

He’d looked so pleased until I made the face and then he pulled back. “What was that look?”

“So much for trying to keep you on your toes. When do you think you’ll look at me and think, ‘Ugh, I’m so bored’?”

He stepped back and took the flowers out of my hand, setting them inside his truck before he gripped both of my hands in his.

“I’ll never be bored with you. It just isn’t possible. You make me lose my mind with how much I want you.”

I bit the inside of my cheek to hold back some of my smile, but his words made me want to kiss his face off.

The frown between his brow deepened.

“Are you bored with me?” he asked.

I buried my face in his neck. “Never. Sometimes I just have these moments of being afraid that we’re too good to be true. That something this easy and wonderful couldn’t possibly last…” My nose stung with the sudden hard-hitting emotions that washed over me. I swallowed back the tears that came out of nowhere.
