He slid his hand into her hair and tilted her head farther back. “Are you going to be mine, angel?” His voice was low and rough.

Her pulse leaped. “I think I’ve always been yours.”

Zac’s lips brushed hers, a teasing pressure. She wasn’t having it. She reached up, gripped the back of his neck, and brought his mouth down on hers.

Cassie’s eyes fluttered closed, and her hands went to his hair, her fingers threading through the short, silky strands. She parted her lips and moaned when he deepened the kiss. Her blood heated in her veins, making her limbs heavy and pliant.

When he finally pulled back, his eyes were dark. “As much as I’d like to find the closest guest room and reacquaint myself with every inch of you. I promised you a party. All the things I want to do to you are going to have to wait.”

Cassie let out a jagged breath as Zac slid the glass door open. “Shall we?”

She nodded and stepped outside.

ChapterForty-Five

Zac guided Cassie out to join the baby shower with a hand on her back. The opening of the door attracted the attention of the others, but it took them a second to realize who he had with him. When they did, there was excited chatter and a whoop from Noah.

Cassie’s smile was a little shy as they all came toward her in a group. Lexie was the first to pull her into a hug.

“Cassie, oh my god. Why didn’t you tell me you were coming? I’m so happy you’re here.”

Cassie laughed at Lexie’s excitement. “I didn’t know I was coming until Zac came and got me.”

Lexie hugged him next. She tipped her head back and smiled at him. “So, is Cassie our gift?”

“I said I had a surprise for your baby shower. The gift part was for me.” He winked at her, and she laughed in delight.

“So, you two are together?”

Zac smiled. “Yeah.” He looked for Cassie and found her being embraced by Eden while Summer waited her turn. “I finally let myself see the possibilities.”

“I’m so happy you’re happy,” she said softly.

“Me too, Lexie. It’s been a while.”

Eventually, after everyone had said hello to Cassie and hugged her, they all sat back down at the table. The press of Cassie’s arm against his sent warmth pulsing through him. This was what he’d been missing from his life. This contentment.

“It’s about time,” Connor spoke from where he sat on Zac’s left.

The corners of Zac’s lips slid up. “Is that so?”

“You know when I knew this was coming?” Connor tipped his chin toward Cassie.

“When?” Zac asked, amused.

“The first time I saw you hold her hand.”

Zac huffed out a laugh. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.” Connor smirked. “I’d never seen you do that before. I knew she’d be the one to break through that thick head of yours.”

“You’re one to talk.” Zac’s gaze landed on Lexie where she was leaning her head toward Drew, a beautiful smile on her face.

“I never claimed to not have a thick head.” Connor’s Irish lilt deepened as he stared at Lexie, his green eyes bright.

“Jesus.” Zac laughed, tipping his head back and scrubbing his hands over his face. “How did this happen to us?”

Tex must have been listening in because he leaned across the table. “Fate works in mysterious ways, man. Don’t question it. Just enjoy the fucking ride.”
