“You’vebitten me before.Inthird grade.Ididn’t exactly enjoy the experience.”

Hewaggles his eyebrows. “I’vehad a lot of practice since then.”

Ilaugh. “Ibet you have.”

ButIdo what he suggested and kneel on the couch between his thighs. It’sa much better angle, and it only takes a minute more to finish drawing around his eyes.

Ihold his chin and turn his face from side to side to admire my work. “Youdon’t even need mascara,”Isigh. “Whyis it so many men have such long, thick lashes? It’sso unfair.”

Hetaps me on the nose. “Jealousydoesn’t become you,ShaeBear.”

Ilook over atDevon, sitting in his armchair watching us. “CanIdo you, too?”

Heraises his brows, his lips curling up at the corners. “Youcan do me anytime.”

“Areyou two ever not in flirt mode?”Isay asIclimb off the couch.

Beaustands too. “I’mgoing to take a piss.Thenwe should get going.”

AsBeauleaves the room,IapproachDevon’schair.

Hetries spreading his legs the same wayBeaudid on the couch, but the arms of the chair make it difficult.Iend up kind of straddling him, with my ass on his lap and my legs wedged between his thighs and the sides of the chair.Itisn’t the most ladylike of positions, but it works.

Icup his jaw to hold him still, doing my best to ignore the annoying flutter in my chest, and carefully get to work outlining his eyes.Aftera few seconds, his gaze drops to my mouth, his pupils dilating, making me realize thatI’mbiting my lower lip asIconcentrate.Theway his irises have darkened releases a kaleidoscope of butterflies in my stomach, andI’msuddenly all too aware of his hard thighs under my backside.

Hisgaze flicks back up asIlean closer and draw in a long, deep breath in the hopes of calming the slight tremor in my hand.Thecitrus and soap scent of him fills my head, sending my pulse into overdrive where it thrums at the base of my throat.WhatwasIthinking, straddling him like this?Theposition is far too intimate.

Iinhale sharply when he rests his large hands on my legs, just where the hem of my skirt has ridden up my thighs.Theunexpected heat of his palms against my bare skin sends a bolt of electricity directly to my core, andIstop pretending to concentrate on whatI’mdoing.

Hewatches me intently, never breaking eye contact, andIlet out a shuddery breath when his thumbs sweep back and forth over my skin.I’mnot sure what’s happening right now, why he’s touching me this way, or why, without thinking,Imimic his movement, brushing my thumb softly over the arch of his cheekbone. It’ssuch a small movement, but it sends a rush of heat through my veins.

Istartle whenBeau’svoice comes from behind me. “What’staking so long?Iknow it’s harder to makeDevonpretty, butI’mready to get this party started.”

Thelittle bubbleDevonandIhave been in pops, andI’mjolted back to reality.Hecasually removes his hands from my thighs, his gaze sliding away from mine and focusing over my shoulder as if nothing happened.Andit didn’t.Itwas an affectionate gesture between friends, that’s all. That’sall it’s ever been.

Afterfinishing his eyeliner as fast asIcan,Ilean back to check my work. “Gorgeous,”Isay before quickly climbing off him, hoping he can’t tell how flusteredIam. “Youboth look far prettier than me.”

Devonstands as well, then hooks his arm around my neck and pulls me into his side as we followBeauto the door.Helowers his head to my ear. “Noone’s prettier than you,Bambi.”

WhenIlook up, his expression is unreadable, soIpat him on the chest and say whatInormally would ifIwasn’t overthinking everything right now. “That’swhy you’re my favorite.”

Obviouslyoverhearing,Beaustops dramatically and claps his hand over his heart in faux hurt.Devongrins at him, andIlaugh.

Butas we walk out the door,Ican still feel the imprint of his hands on my thighs.

ChapterEight

Devon

Thecar pulls upoutside the hotel, and the camera flashes start immediately.I’mnot surprised the paparazzi are out in full force, considering who the owners of the club are.Crossfirehas gotten big fast, but compared to the star power of some of the celebrities putting their names to this place, we’ve still got a way to go.

Avalet opens the door, andBeauis out first, extending a hand toShae.Hereyes are big as she takes in our surroundings.Thechaos can be overwhelming for someone who isn't accustomed to it.Thephotographers immediately call out, wanting photos ofBeauandShae, andIbring up the rear, more than happy not to have the focus on me.

Beaustops and puts his arm aroundShae’swaist, pulling her close.Theylook like a couple, and that’s exactly what the tabloids will be speculating tomorrow.Astrange sensation twists in my gut, even thoughIknow it’s not true.

Butit could have been.

Ishove the thought aside, watching asShaehangs on toBeau’sarm, her head turning side to side as camera flashes light her up.Iwasn’t lying back at the apartment. She’sbeautiful, with her long mahogany waves brushing the curve of her breasts, her smooth skin glowing under the bright lights, and her short skirt and heels showing off her long legs.
