“Right.” I wink and tap my ear. Mercy comes online immediately.

“Hear some chatter over the police comms that there was a shootout at your hotel. Do you know anything about that?”

“I don’t know who is behind it, but I finished the job, and there appear to be some loose ends that need cleaning up. And I borrowed a motorcycle. It’s parked outside the safe house. Can you prepare for an extraction?”

“I don’t like all the paperwork I’m going to have to fill out,” she grumbles, but I hear her typing, which means she’s making the arrangements. “Tonight?”

“Tomorrow.” The talk might take a while.

The typing stops. “Tomorrow?” A suspicious note creeps in.

In front of me, Georgia’s frown is deepening. I can see the questions about ready to burst out of her. “Tomorrow,” I repeat and then hang up.

Georgia opens her mouth.

I hold up my hand. “I’ll explain it all. First off…I’m a hitman.”

ChapterTwenty

GEORGIA

“An associate?” I fold my trembling arms over my chest.

“Did you hear what I said?” Finn steps toward me. I match his steps, taking one back. From his expression, you’d think I smacked him. What I want to do is throw my whole body into him and wrap myself around him.

“It was a female voice. I heard it myself.” My mind is swirling with so many things, but for some reason, I’m latching on to this married thing. I mean, never mind the high-speed getaway we just made from the men that were shooting at us. Oh my God! I was just shot at!

“I think you’re in shock.”

“I am!” I shout in agreement. He tries again to come close to me, but I hold my hands out to stop him. Finn’s entire body freezes, making me feel a smidge bad. Great, now I want to go comfort him. The hell is wrong with me?

“You’re in shock. That’s what's wrong with you.” I must have said the last part out loud. “It’s normal in these types of situations.”

“Normal? These types of situations!” A hysterical bubble of laughter pops from me. I guess that’s what we’re calling the gun battle that went down in our hotel room. “I dropped the gun!” I suddenly remember. “What if they come for us again? Wait, who was coming for us?”

“I have more.” He walks over to a door, opening it to reveal a closet filled with all kinds of things that look like they could be used as weapons. I mean, some are straightforward but there are others that I’m not sure exactly what they are. What I do know is there are tons of guns. The kind you only see in movies.

“Cause you’re a hitman.” My bottom lip trembles. The realization of what he’d said earlier finally hits me. I suppose my mind could only suppress it for so long before I had to face it.

“Please, let me come to you,” Finn pleads with me.

“No.” I shake my head. “You can’t touch me. When you touch me, I don’t think straight. Who am I kidding? You’re not touching me now, and I can’t think right.” I take a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.

I glance around the tiny studio apartment. There isn’t much to it. Had he called it a safe house? Had he asked for a cleanup and extraction? I want to call him insane. This can’t be real, but I saw it for myself. There had been so many men trying to kill him.

“You’re not like shot, right?” I run my eyes all over him. He appears to be fine, but it’s rare to get a reaction out of Finn. He really is good at hiding things. Obviously. I never in a million years would have guessed he was a hitman. I mean, I didn’t even think that was a real job.

“Not today,” he clips.

“That is not funny!” I hiss at him.

“So, you’d care if I was shot?” He gives me that smirk. I love when I get that from him. Right now, I kind of want to smack it off his handsome face. I also want to kiss him. Maybe I’m the insane one.

“I just wanna be extra clear here. You’re definitely not married?” He shakes his head no. “Girlfriend?”

“You’re really focused on this marriage thing.”

“Are you avoiding the girlfriend question?”
