“I’m glad to hear it. I don’t want Control to have the option to walk away.”

“Over my dead body. He fucked with the wrong club, and then he fucked with your girl. Two very wrong choices if you ask me. I’ve got some shit I need to handle, so get that stuff for your sister and check in with her. She hasn’t seen you too much lately, and I know she misses ya.”

I nod, rise from the chair, and head over to his office door. “Closed or open?”

“Close it, please.”

I do as he asks and shut the door behind me on my way out. I have one of my other credit cards on me, so I walk through the clubhouse and out through the heavy metal doors. I could take my bike, but there’s a good chance there’s going to be a torrential downpour here in an hour. So, I snag the keys to my truck from my pocket and walk right up to her, slide in, and start her up.

The nearest grocery store with a decent selection is about fifteen minutes away, so I head that way, and my phone goes off in the meantime.

Rebellion’s name flashes across the screen in the center of my truck, and my Bluetooth device reads off her message in a robotic voice. “Hey. I’m having a lot of fun with your sister. Thank you for suggesting this.”

“Would you like to reply? Say yes or no,” the robotic voice directs me.

“Yes.”

“Please prepare to state your message after the beep.”

I wait for the beeping sound, and then it comes. “Hey. I’m glad you’re having a lot of fun. Can’t wait to see you when you get back to the club later. I’m actually heading to the grocery store to get a few things for the club. Did you want anything while I’m there?” It’s not my place to tell Rebellion about my sister’s pregnancy, so I’ll wait until Calli announces it to the club. I won’t even act like I know. Calli might have her suspicions when I bring her this stuff, but I’m going to act like our father sent me out to get things for her. I don’t need the credit for doing a good thing.

I don’t get an immediate reply back, so I head to the store and get everything my father said to. I pick up a few more things for the club while I’m at it, like bottled water, sodas, juices to stock the bar area with, snacks, and a few other things. I even google natural remedies for early pregnancy symptoms and picked up some things like apple cider vinegar, milk, papaya, and aloe vera. I don’t exactly know what the hell they do because I didn’t read the article in that deep of detail, but at least it’s something for Calli that will help.

I check out, and I’m almost finished loading the car up when the distinctive sound of rumbling bikes goes past me. I glance up and look at the cuts, curious if some of my brothers are riding around in the now downpour of rain. Much to my dismay, it isn’t my brothers. It’s the very men we were avoiding.

I pull out my phone and send off a group text.

Burning Heretics are here. Just saw them ride by in town.

I call up Rebellion, and the phone keeps ringing and ringing. She doesn’t answer, which only causes me to grow more worried. There’s going to be blood today, and someone’s going to pay with their life.

Fuck, I need to find her.

I need to find her before her father does.

Rebellion

The afternoon sun streams through the window of the art supply store, casting a golden glow on shelves lined with colorful paints and pastels. I can’t help but smile as I watch Amira enthusiastically pluck different supplies from the racks, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

“Have you ever painted with pastels?” she asks, grabbing a box and thrusting it into my hands. “The online review says these blend like a dream.”

“Really?” I ask, examining the box of vibrant colors. It has been so long since I’ve allowed myself to buy new supplies. The idea of creating something with brand-new paints feels almost foreign.

“Absolutely,” she insists, already moving on to the next aisle. “Oh! And you’ll need some textured paper for you to work with. Dion said you used to love drawing landscapes, right?”

I nod, warmth spreading through me at the mention of Dion. He’s been nothing but supportive since we met, and his family is just as welcoming. In fact, being around them makes me realize how different life could be—or, more to the point, how different my life could be.

“Hey, Amira?” I call out hesitantly, following her down the aisle filled with sketch pads and canvases. “Can I ask you something?”

“Of course!” She grins, looking up from a stack of watercolor paper. “What’s on your mind?”

I hesitate, unsure where to begin. “What’s it like to have a family like yours? You know, one that doesn’t . . . well . . . suck?”

Amira laughs softly, her eyes gentle. “Oh, it hasn’t always been this way. It was really complicated at first. My sister and I didn’t grow up with our father in our lives. Calli found him a couple of years ago, and since then, we’ve been back in each other’s lives. It’s a complicated story, but now? It’s great. I mean, sure, we still fight sometimes, but we always have each other’s back. We’re a team, you know?”
