Rebellion

We step back into Dion’s room at the Sons of Gods’ clubhouse. It’s been a few days since the incident, and now that the Burning Heretics have finally been defeated, I feel relief but also apprehension as I try to wrap my mind around all that’s happened.

“Hey, are you all right?” Dion asks me, his deep voice laced with concern.

I nod, struggling to find the right words. “Yeah, it’s just . . . a lot to process, y’know?”

“Of course,” he says, pulling me into a warm embrace. His strong arms wrap around me, offering comfort and protection. “But no matter what happens next, remember that you have a place here with the Sons of Gods.”

“Thank you, Dion,” I whisper. “That means more to me than I can say.”

He nods and lets go of our embrace, his blue eyes searching mine. “Speaking of your old life, we took care of everything for you in Atlanta. The guys went in and packed up your apartment. We figured you wouldn’t want to go back there, especially since Rager’s taken over since Control’s death.” As Zeus was leaving, he heard the last remaining members of the Burning Heretics screaming about one of the men still breathing. They carried Rager out through the doors, and I heard that Rager was still in the hospital. How he managed to survive gunshot wounds and being smacked around in the head is beyond me.

My breath catches in my throat, anxiety gripping my chest. “You did? That’s . . . thank you. I appreciate it.” Though the thought of Rager ruling over what was once my home is terrifying, I’m relieved that the Sons of Gods stepped in to help.

“Anything for you,” Dion says, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “We’re going to make sure you’re safe and taken care of.”

Tears blur my vision as I look at him, this beautiful man who has gone above and beyond to protect me. Somehow, I know that he means every word—that with him, I’ll never have to fear for my safety again.

“Thank you,” I say again, my voice thick with emotion. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”

Dion smirks and leans in, pressing a kiss to my forehead. “You’re one of the strongest, most incredible women I’ve ever met, Rebellion. You deserve every good thing that comes your way.”

The warmth of Dion’s arms around me, his steady heartbeat against my ear, and the faint scent of leather clinging to him all work together to ground me at this moment. I’ve never felt safer than I do right now, wrapped up in him.

“Rebellion,” Dion says softly, pulling back just enough to look me in the eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t kill Rager for you. I should’ve intervened before you did what you did. At least then, he wouldn’t still be drawing breath. I can’t fuckin’ believe that bastard is still alive.”

I shake my head, meeting his intense gaze. “It’s okay. I don’t ever want to go back to Atlanta again, anyway. Him being in charge of the Heretics just cements that.” The thought sends shivers down my spine, but I push it away. I don’t know who’s left of the Burning Heretics, but I think it’s completely asinine for them to give leadership to a man who could still very well be on his deathbed. I don’t know his status, but I imagine it can’t be any good.

Dion studies my face for a moment before flashing me a grin. “Well, then, let’s focus on something else. I have a surprise for you.”

“Really?” I raise an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. “What is it?”

“Not so fast,” he says, wagging a finger at me. “You’ll have to wait and see.”

“Such a tease,” I mutter, swatting his chest.

“Guilty,” Dion chuckles, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Now, come on, let’s get going.”

“Going? Where are we going?” I ask as he pulls me toward the door.

“Didn’t I just say it’s a surprise?” Dion smirks, his hand warm in mine. “Trust me, you’re going to love it.”

My heart races with anticipation as I follow Dion out of the room and into the hallway. The Sons of Gods’ clubhouse is alive with activity, the heavy beat of music, and the low murmur of conversation filling the air. But even amid the chaos, Dion’s presence is a calming force. He leads me through the crowd of people, his hand never leaving mine.

I can’t help but wonder what this surprise could be. A part of me is afraid to hope, to believe that I might have a future beyond the life I left behind in Atlanta. But with Dion by my side, it suddenly feels like anything is possible.

“Ready?” Dion asks, pausing outside the door to the clubhouse’s parking lot.

“More than ready,” I reply, eager to discover what he has in store for me.

“Good,” he says, grinning as he pushes open the door and leads me out into the sunlight. “Let’s go.”

The gravel crunches under our feet as we make our way to Dion’s truck. He opens the passenger door for me, and I slide into the leather seat, feeling the butterflies in my stomach flutter with excitement.

“All right, buckle up,” Dion says as he climbs into the driver’s seat. “We’ve got a bit of a drive ahead of us.”

“Where are we going?” I ask, trying to keep my voice steady despite the anticipation building inside me.
