CHAPTERSEVEN

Sarge

It’s been a week and a half since Luna said she could come here. I find I’ve been like a child who’s waiting for Christmas. I can’t help but count down the days until she’s finally here, and the closer we get, the more excited I become.

I’m in the bar portion of The Clubhouse. It’s a typical Wednesday evening, which is ladies’ night here at the bar. It’s not fully packed, but there are groups of women everywhere. I usually prefer to stay downstairs when it’s busy like this, but there have been a couple of fights breaking out the last couple of ladies’ nights, so Breaker requested a couple men from the club stay upstairs.

I’m sitting at the end of the bar, and Kara, Breaker’s ol’ lady, is one of the bartenders working tonight. She’s all smiles, and after serving drink after drink to thirsty women, she waltzes on over to me.

Her hair is a deep caramel brown today, so I guess she’s changed her wig recently. Every few weeks, she does something different. When Breaker first started bringing her around, she had really dark, mocha-colored hair. I think the caramel suits her better. “What’s got you smiling so much?” Kara flashes her pearly whites at me, and I debate what I should tell her. Sure, I told Armor and Breaker. Though, I know when you tell a woman anything, there’s always a chance it will spread like wildfire. Especially this type of news.

Kara might very well go around to the other women in the club and tell them I’m smitten about some woman I went to school with back in the day. That’s not the part that bothers me. It’s the possibility of them pressuring Luna. Hell, they’d probably interrogate the living shit out of her. While the women here are very accepting of the women the men have brought in, I know they’re protective too.

“What, cat got your tongue?” Kara playfully sticks her tongue out at me, and I take a sip of my Jack and Coke. Ever since I was in Julian, I’ve been drinking more of these. The taste reminds me of Luna’s lips, something I hope to experience firsthand sometime soon.

“No, nothing like that. I have an old friend coming to visit in a couple days.” I’m sure if I tell Kara to keep everything on the down low, she will.

Kara wiggles her eyebrows dramatically. “Does this old friend happen to be a she?”

A woman screaming causes both of us to turn our attention to the sound. It’s coming from the corner of the bar, and as I spot Killer rushing over there, the crowd breaks up enough for us to see that it’s a woman here for her twenty-first birthday celebration who’s now laughing her ass off.

“Can I get another?” I ask Kara and point down to my almost empty drink.

“Sure you can, as long as you answer my question.”

“I can’t recall what that question was.”

“Bull-fucking-shit, Sarge. If you don’t want to tell me, then I guess you don’t need that drink so bad.” Kara swipes my glass from in front of me. My glass which has at least another swig left in it.

This has to be why Breaker likes her so much. She’s quick on her feet and has no problem improvising to have the situation benefit what she wants. She’s smart. I’ll give her that. “Yes, she’s a woman.”

“Just as I thought. I need more details. What’s her name?” Kara tosses the remaining liquid in the glass down the drain and then places it in a tray of dirty dishes.

“Her name is Luna.” If we’re doing this, I’m going to give her one piece of information at a time. She’s going to have to work for it, and I can’t wait until my short answers start to irritate her.

“How do you know her? Have you guys known each other for a long time? You said old friend, so I guess so, but I want to know.”

“We went to school together from the point we were small children.”

Kara begins making me another Jack and Coke. “Oh really? Were you more than friends back in the day, or is that something new?”

“I never said we were more than friends in the first place.”

“I’m not new around the block, Sarge. I know how things like this go. I want to know everything about her because you haven’t stopped smiling. That means she must be someone pretty special, so cut the crap and tell me all about her.” Kara smiles brightly at me, and I don’t think she’s going to go off and tell everyone my business. Still, I need to make sure.

“Promise me you won’t go around tellin’ all the other ol’ ladies about her. I want Luna to have a good time here, not be forced to fit into the ranks.”

“You have my word. I’ll keep them in check,” Kara declares. She might be the newest woman in the club, but she’s Breaker’s ol’ lady, which means she’s the head bitch in charge. It works like that in every club. The Prez’s woman is always the one keeping the other women in line. “But to be fair, they would never do anything bad. They’d just be excited for you, is all.”

“I know, but I just want to slowly ease into this. I don’t want all of the extra pressure.”

“Fair enough. Go on, get to talking.” Kara hands me my new drink, and I take a sip.

The bar is getting busier, but Jada is behind it, making sure everyone is tended to. One of the things I love about the women in our club is that even though they have day jobs and other commitments, they always make sure to pitch in when we need it.

“I’ve known her since I was a little boy. We both grew up in the same town, and we reconnected over the weekend when I was in Julian for my parents’ anniversary party. We were in the same class all through the years, from elementary up until high school. In high school, she actually saved my ass by tutoring me. I almost got kicked off the football team because my English grade kept slipping. If it weren’t for Luna, I wouldn’t have been able to stay on.”

“Aw, that’s so sweet. What’s she look like?”
