“You would win the wager.”

I studied him. “You’re quiet, Tryst. What’s on your mind?”

He reached his arm behind me and pulled me close to him. “I am troubled about Montano—Onyx. While my brother’s wife is his mother’s twin—so he is not actually related to me—when they were growing up, he and his siblings called me their uncle.”

“As Doc said, it’s understandable he’d be upset over what happened to his sister.”

“It is the threat he’s alluded to that troubles me. He intends to take down Los Caballeros.”

I was somewhat surprised Tryst was so forthright. However, he knew I was aware of the secret society. “What would that entail?”

“Exposing…certain things.”

“I see.”

“One of the previous members—Zin’s father, in fact—has called an emergency meeting. It will take place tonight, and we will address the threat.”

“How worried are you?”

“More about him than his intention. Los Caballeros has weathered many storms throughout the years. Theviejos, which is my generation, had our fair share.”

I smiled. “You’re hardly old, Tryst.”

“I appreciate you saying so. My nephew referred to us as theancianosrecently. I told him they were my father’s generation.”

We both took in the breathtaking view for several minutes.

“What is onyourmind, Jaicon?”

“I’ve been thinking about your comment to Doc about envying his time with his children.”

“You’re wondering why I never had any of my own.”

“If it’s none of my business—”

He tightened his hold on me. “If there is something I don’t wish to discuss, I will say so. I expect you to do the same.”

“Fair enough.”

“Rosa and I tried for many years. It was a visit to the doctor to look into fertility treatments that led to the cancer diagnosis.”

I rested my head on his shoulder. “I’m so sorry.”

“After that, we never discussed the matter of not being able to have children again. Which means we never learned the reason we couldn’t.”

“I understand.”

“What about you and your husband? Did you discuss having a family?”

“We did not.” It was a lie, both in fact and by omission, but I wasn’t ready to talk about it. I might never be.

Our return walk was quiet, and rather than be comfortable in the silence, I felt as though a wall—one of my making—had gone up between us.

TRYST

After returning to the main house, Jaicon went in search of Merrigan while I visited Jada. She had withdrawn further than yesterday, and my concern for her increased. She spoke very little and, shortly after I arrived, slept.
