“Hang on. Slow down. A whip?”

“They are used at the riding center, but not in the way you might think. I tried to explain it to Jada, but she was too far gone by then.”

I jumped when I heard Jada whimper. “Let me,” I said when Lynne walked in the direction of the bedroom. “I want to stay with her.”

Her eyes scrunched, but she nodded. “I’ll be across the hallway if you need me.”

When I felta hand on my shoulder, I scrubbed my face with my palm and opened my eyes. It was daylight.

“Please go get some sleep,” said Jada.

“How are you this morning?” I asked, slowly attempting to loosen my muscles, stiff and sore from sleeping in the chair.

“Better. I’m sorry about yesterday.”

I leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Do not apologize.”

“I lost it.”

“It is part of the process, little one. The fault is mine.” I looked over at Lynne. “Will you be okay if I sleep a while?”

“I’ll kick your butt if you don’t.”

I was on my way into my bedroom when Lynne opened Jada’s door. “Before I forget again, Jaicon stopped by yesterday. I told her you and Jada were at the meditation center. Did she find you?”

My God, I’d completely forgotten I told her we’d talk yesterday. “She did not,” I said, shaking my head.

“Get some rest, Tryst.”

I sat on the edge of the bed and called Jaicon. It immediately went to voicemail, so I sent a text.

I’m sorry about yesterday. Jada had a setback. Please call when you receive this message.

I lay down and shut my eyes but held my phone in my hand in case she responded. When I woke a few hours later, she hadn’t.

Jada and Lynnewere sitting in the kitchen when I came out of the bedroom.

“Did you get some rest?” Jada asked.

“I did.” I turned to Lynne. “Will you excuse us?”

“Are you okay?” Jada asked once the nurse left the room.

I was not. I owed her an apology. “I’m sorry for pushing you yesterday. I was the one who told you there is no timeline to healing.”

“You’re wrong now. You weren’t then.”

My eyes scrunched.

“If you don’t push me, who will?”

“The progress you make, working through your recovery, will be up to you, little one.”

“Will you take me to the meditation center?”

My eyes opened wide. “When?”

“Now?”
