“I told him it would never work between us. He’s moved on.”

She shook her head. “He hasn’t.”

I put my hands on my hips. “Oh, really? And you’ve had a conversation with the man?”

“I have not, but someone else who cares about you has.”

“Bloody hell. I made Merrigan promise not to interfere.”

“Actually, you made her promise not to push you into something you weren’t ready for.”

I raised a brow. “I thought you hated the woman. Now, you’re bosom buddies?”

“United by our concern for you.”

“Tell me how you see this playing out. I travel to Mexico, knock on his door, and say I heard he wasn’t over me?”

“You’ll figure out what to do when you get there.”

“I’m not going.”

Oleander shook her head. “Yes. You are. Would you like to know why I’m so certain?”

“If I said no—”

“Because you’ve already decided to go.”

“I haven’t.”

O rolled her eyes. “Go look in the mirror and say you aren’t going to Mexico. See if it’s as easy to lie to yourself as it is to me.”

“I have responsibilities here in England.” I’d listed my flat six months ago and hadn’t had a single offer.

“I have to admit I was as surprised as Merrigan that you didn’t return at least for a few days after the fire.”

My eyes scrunched. “What fire?”

O was a master at hiding her reactions to nearly everything. So the fact her mouth was hanging open meant she was truly stunned.

“Oleander,what fire?”

“Tryst’s meditation center burned to the ground.”

I was so angry no one had mentioned it to me. I was shaking. “How long have you known?”

“Not long, maybe a week. It happened months ago, though.”

“Excuse me.”

I didn’t bloody well care what time it was in California; I pulled out my mobile and rang Merrigan.

“What’s this about a fire?”

“Hello, Jaicon.”

“Don’t fucking toy with me. Why wasn’t I informed?”

“I honestly thought you knew.”
