“I would like that as well.”

While our lovemaking was rushed before dinner, afterward we took our time, bringing each other as much pleasure as we could, late into the night.

When the time came for him to take me to the airport in Alamos, a feeling of foreboding washed over me. I did my best to tamp it down, but Tryst noticed.

“You are troubled. I will make arrangements for someone else to work with the vet today and travel with you.”

“I’ll be okay. I promise. And I’ll feel better once I have the team assembled and we have crafted our plan for the event.”

While I tried hard to reassure Tryst, by the time I boarded the plane, the feeling was significantly worse.

TRYST

Iwas about to arrange for my own flight to California when I received a call from my niece, Alex, saying she was on her way to the ranch.

“I’ll be there in less than thirty minutes,” she said when I asked when she planned to arrive. “I just got off the plane.”

I shook my head and chuckled when I ended the call. Alex had been a force of nature since the day she was born. Like a hurricane.

I called Jaicon to let her know I might be delayed another day. “I promise to make it up to you, my love.”

Like with everything, Jaicon did not complain but made my heart happy when she confessed how much she missed me. I could not fathom a life without her in it and expressed my thanks for her every time I prayed.

I was overjoyed when Alex said she’d be returning to California later the same day, and sent Jacy a message with the update. As soon as I had, I called a friend and made arrangements for a very special place for her and me to stay at while we were on the Central Coast. I’d thought of it many times and knew she’d love it.

I had spent so little time with Jada since Jaicon arrived in Mexico, but seeing her now, filled my heart with joy. She’d returned to the ranch in February, aimless and, like me at the time, without a sense of purpose. Since, she’d made great progress in her mental and emotional recovery, and now blossomed.

She’d graduated from law school in the States but hadn’t taken the bar, unsure if she wanted to. In the eight months she’d been here, she’d completed the work she needed to do in order to be able to practice law in Mexico. Her chosen specialty was to become an immigration attorney so she could help those like the human trafficking victims to not fall vulnerable to people who would exploit them.

I knew she and Zin loved each other very much, and it broke my heart that they hadn’t found their way back to each other. I prayed that, like Jaicon and me, they would one day soon.

I’d always consideredthe flight from Alamos to San Luis Obispo to be quick. Today, the time dragged. I was like a child on Christmas morning when we landed, so anxious to get to Butler Ranch, where I knew Jaicon waited, and hold her in my arms.

Instead, when we deboarded, my love was waiting for me at the terminal gate. I raced over to her, gathered her in my arms, and kissed her.

“Um, kids, your PDA is drawing a crowd in the airport,” said Alex, teasing us.

“Go away, Alexis,” I said before kissing Jacy again.

“Did you know about this?” I heard her ask Jada, but I tuned out whatever her answer was. By tomorrow night, everyone would know, and I couldn’t wait to share and celebrate our love.

“I have a car if you need a lift,” Jaicon offered.

“I left mine here, so Jada and I will leave you two love birds on your own,” said Alex. “Although you might want to get a room,” she added under her breath.

Jaicon drove up the coast, and when we reached the turnoff for Butler Ranch, I told her to keep going and that I’d give her directions as we went. She glanced over at me and smiled but didn’t ask where I was taking her. I loved that about her. Her sense of adventure, the way she trusted me, her faith in me.

“I missed you so,” I said, reaching over to put my hand on her leg.

“Next time, I won’t argue when you want to postpone an appointment. I missed you too.”

We continued another twenty miles north on Pacific Coast Highway. “There will be a sign in another half mile. You will know to turn there.” She raised a brow, but again, she didn’t ask.

She smiled when she saw the sign I referenced.“El Lugar de Curación North,”she said, reading the hand-drawn sign affixed to the mile marker near the turnoff. We took the dirt road a few more yards and stopped in front of our cottage-by-the-sea getaway.

We exited the vehicle and came together, embracing as we took in the sweeping ocean views.
