“Sorry, I was just ready to get out of there,” I said, handing him his jacket and then hitting the down button.

He frowned. “Did something happen?”

Shit.My fingers went up to my lips as if he could see they’d been devoured by the enemy, but realizing that came off too obvious, I coughed and rubbed my stubbled jaw instead. “Uh, no, nothing like that. I just hate these things, is all.”

“Yeah, it was kinda stiff. Thank God James was there.”

Actually, if James had been paying more attention to his date, his date wouldn’t have been paying any attention to me. So fuck James.

“We met in college at a party, which is funny because we met on the dance floor there, and then tonight, meeting again back on the dance floor…”

He prattled on as the elevator took us downstairs and we caught a cab to his place. I never took dates back to mine if I could help it.

As soon as the car door slammed shut and we were plunged into darkness, I figured the best way to get Ronnie’s mind off his friend and back on me was to let him know my intentions. I moved my hand to his thigh as he told the driver his address, and when he looked back at me, it was on.

He wasted no time moving across the seat and slamming his mouth down on mine. The force of it was surprising, but I welcomed it anyway. I needed this. Needed him to drive the events of tonight right out of my head.

The problem was, he was eager, his tongue even more so, and something about the kiss was so off-putting that I pulled back.

“No need to be shy,” he said with a grin. “The driver doesn’t care.”

He dove back in, and I moved my head to the side, letting him kiss down my neck as I closed my eyes and tried to get into it. Ronnie’s lips weren’t Drew’s lips, though, and after having my mind blown earlier, there was just no comparison. My dick seemed to agree, since it refused to stir at all, and that was when I knew I was screwed. And not in the way I’d been hoping for.

The cab pulled up in front of Ronnie’s apartment, and he hopped off my lap, handed the driver some cash, and popped open the door.

Ugh. I was such an asshole for this, but there was no way I’d be able to get it up for this guy. Not without some serious inspiration, and that wasn’t happening.

“You know what? I’m, uh, not really feeling that great. I think I’m gonna head home.”

Ronnie leaned back down. “What?”

“I think I must’ve eaten something bad or…something.” God, I was such a bad liar. Even the driver was pressing his lips together, trying not to laugh.

“Uh huh. You’re really gonna go?”

“Yeah. I am.”

Ronnie scoffed and shook his head. I could practically see what he was thinking: all that effort at a boring event for nothing. It was true, but I just wasn’t feeling it.

“Right. Later,” he said, reaching for the cell in his pocket before the door even shut. As the cab pulled away, I saw him texting, and I had a feeling I knew who was on the other end.

I dropped my head back on the seat and tried to summon up feeling even slightly guilty for ditching him, but I felt…nothing.

Instead, my mind went to Drew. I’d spent years trying to get over that asshole, and in one night I ruined all the progress I’d made. He knew I was weak now. No doubt he’d use it against me one day if he could, and the thought had my stomach turning.

Well. Looked like I hadn’t been completely lying to Ronnie about being sick after all.

DREW

MONDAY MORNING ROLLED in like a friggin’ freight train. I somehow managed to sleep through my alarm, ran out of my apartment so fast I forgot my coffee, and then, once I arrived at the office, I realized the pants I thought were black were actually a dark green that clashed with my shirt.

Fuck me. I didn’t have any meetings scheduled where I’d actually have to look the part of a competent person, did I?

My brain was never this scrambled, but I’d barely slept the last two nights, and that blame could be placed solely on Hudson’s shoulders.

What the hell had I been thinking kissing him like that?Him, of all people? Sure, drinking led to stupid mistakes on occasion, but not usually as big as kissing the one person who couldn’t stand the sight of me.
