“I’ll make sure to send you the cleaning bill when I return the car,” I said as I hit my blinker and moved into the exit lane.

“Where’s your Maserati?”

“You think I was taking my baby out in this weather?” I gave him a sidelong glance. “I’d say, considering the state of you, it’s a good thing I went with a rental.”

Hudson drew his lips into a thin line but didn’t respond. Maybe he was chastising himself for not checking a weather app before heading out. Or annoyed he wasn’t ruining the leather ofmycar.

As I came to a stop at the top of the exit ramp, my cell began to ring, and I glanced down to see Levi’s name on the screen. I tapped a button on the wheel to answer. “Levi, hey.”

“Hello? Drew? Are you there?”

“Yeah, I’m here,” I said, practically shouting this time. “Sorry it’s loud—I got caught in the storm, but we’re almost there.”

“That’s what I’m calling you about. The ferry’s been shut down.”

I blinked. “What?”

“The ferry to the island. It’s the only way to get here, and with the storm getting worse, they’re shutting things down until it passes.”

“Shit.” I looked over at Hudson, who wore the sameare you fucking kidding meexpression that I probably had. “So…are we talkin’ sometime tonight, or first thing in the morning?”

“There’s no way it’ll be back up before at least tomorrow afternoon, and that’s if the storm doesn’t decide to hang around over us. Where are you right now?”

“About ten minutes away from the ferry.”

“Oh damn. Sorry about that. This thing kinda snuck up on everyone—we thought it was heading back out to sea.”

I suppressed a sigh and shrugged. “It’s fine. I’ll just head back to the city, and we can try this again when it passes.”

Hudson grabbed my arm, and when I looked at him, he was shaking his head.

“What?”

He mouthed something at me, but I couldn’t try to read his lips and drive at the same time.

“Hudson, just spit it out.”

“Oh, Hudson’s there with you?” Levi said.

The look Hudson gave me then was murderous. I guessed his presence was supposed to be a secret.

“Yeah, he hitchhiked his way onto my ride,” I said. “Flat tire.”

“No way, are you serious?”

“Yeah, but he’s fine,” I said, shooting Hudson a wry grin. “Just a little wet.”

“Damn, it’s a good thing you weren’t far away.”

“Mhmm. He owes me big now. Huge.”

Hudson rolled his eyes.

“Look, Drew, I don’t think it’s a smart idea for you guys to drive back to the city. You’re not far from a couple of hotels, so why don’t you grab rooms somewhere and we’ll cover the cost?”

Hudson still had his hand on my arm, and squeezed it so he could get a word in. “Thanks, but we can handle the rooms. We won’t be driving back tonight.”

As he removed his hand from me and sat back, my brows knitted together. Did he think he was the driver? We already saw how that went.
