“Yeah, of course.” I smiled. “It’s good to see you, H.”

He reached behind him and pulled out a long stem that he must’ve taken from Mom’s bouquet.

“This is for you,” he said.

“Me?”

Hudson nodded, a blush appearing on his cheeks. God, I felt like I was fifteen and on a first date, but I’d never had a guy over to my parents’ place.

I twirled the purple flower between my fingers before bringing it up to smell. “I don’t believe it,” I said. “Hudson Montgomery, a romantic. You trying to charm me or my mom?”

The way his eyes seared into mine, I didn’t even need to ask the question. It was all laid out for everyone to see.

I glanced over my shoulder, making sure the parentals were staying put, and then pushed against Hudson’s stomach with my fingertips. His abs tightened under my touch, but he allowed me to walk him back into the cove of the entrance out of sight.

“What are you doing,” he murmured, his lips curving up like he planned to go along with anything I asked of him. He always did. I never understood why, but I wasn’t about to question it.

I tucked the flower over one ear and then wrapped my hands around his waist under his jacket. His body was so warm and inviting, and suddenly I wished we were anywhere else. A week had been entirely too long.

God, I had it bad.

My lips brushed hot skin as I nuzzled into his neck. “I missed you, H.”

“Yeah?” I could hear the smile in his voice as he threaded his hands through my hair. “That’s more like it.”

I brushed kiss after kiss along his neck and up his jaw, inhaling the intoxicating scent of him. No one smelled as good as Hudson.

He tugged gently on the strands between his fingers, and when I lifted my head, he lowered his mouth onto mine. It was slow and passionate, an “I missed you too” kiss.

Maybe there was something to the whole “absence makes the heart grow fonder” thing.

“Drew, Hudson, we’re all set up for Scrabble,” Mom called out, and I groaned against Hudson’s lips.

“I hope you’re as good with words as you are with your mouth,” I said with a wink before dragging him to the dining room.

I WOKE UP stretched out across an empty bed in a damp sweat. The room wasn’t quite as dark, but the rain still pounded against the window.

The sheets were twisted around my legs as I sat up, but it was too warm for that. I kicked them off and scrubbed a hand over my face, wiping the sleep away. It wasn’t hot so much as it was stifling and humid without the A/C working. Ugh, which meant the power was still out.

Where was Hudson? Had he decided to leave my ass and make a swim for it or something?

Just the thought of him had my dream slamming back into my brain with stunning clarity. That had been a good night. Even with Hudson wiping the floor with us at Scrabble. I remembered feeling proud to have him sitting beside me, and my folks had loved him. It wasn’t the last time he’d been invited over, and we’d made sure not to go so long without seeing each other…

At least until things ended.

The door beeped and was pushed wide, then clicked quietly shut. Hudson entered the room, still in the clothes he’d worn to bed, only with his sleeves rolled up his forearms and a brown paper bag in one hand.

He was trying to be quiet, which I supposed was his way of being nice, but it would’ve been nicer not waking up alone.

Wait. No. That was the dream talking. My past and present were blurring.

As I mentally slapped myself, Hudson looked up.

“Oh, you’re awake.” He set the bag down on the table before pocketing his key card. “I grabbed some of everything they had available, if you’re hungry. Nothing fancy, since everything’s still down.”

A nice gesture didn’t come too often from Hudson, at least not to me. I’d take it. “Thanks.”

As I got to my feet, Hudson’s eyes traveled down my body, but when they landed below my hips, he quickly looked away.
