If my comment bothered Hudson, his stoic demeanor didn’t show it. With his broad shoulders squared and facing forward, he looked more like a bodyguard than a fan.

“I would’ve thought you’d save your desperate attempt at witty banter for the client you’re trying to poach,” he said.

“Viper? Your client? Oh, Montgomery, when did you grow a sense of humor?”

Hudson shook his head in response, but it wasn’t until I inched closer and placed a hand on his shoulder that he jerked his head my way. The surprise on his face at my touch soon turned into something more accusing, and suddenly getting a strong reaction out of Hudson was my number one priority.

“Come on, we both know this isn’t your scene. This is just a—what was the word you used?—desperateattempt at trying to win overmysoon-to-be client.”

“You always did have impossible dreams.”

“Oh, I don’t know. I think I was pretty convincing at getting something I wanted.”

Take that for what you will,I thought, and as Hudson narrowed his eyes at me, I figured he was thinking the same thing I was.

He didn’t say anything for a long moment, but the intensity of his gaze holding mine did something to me that was completely unexpected. Especially when he reached up to hold my wrist.

I swallowed as my pulse kicked up, hammering out a faster rhythm from being so close and actually touching. A scene from our past flashed in my mind, a secret moment shared when it wasn’t words that were exchanged…

But just as soon as the memory appeared, it was over, as Hudson picked my hand up off his shoulder and dropped it like he would a fly.

“I’ve got it from here,” he said, focusing back on the empty step-and-repeat. “You can go home now.”

It took me a second to get my bearings, but once I did, I quickly flipped to the charming ass I knew drove him crazy.

“As if I’d roll over and die to let you get what you want. You’re out of your league here.”

“You seem to be suffering from a memory lapse. Might want to get that checked out.”

Before I could ask him what he meant by that, cheers erupted, echoing off the walls as the band made their way onto the step-and-repeat, all of them in different clothes and looking freshly showered.

Hudson and I both stepped back from the line at the same time, not wanting to be rushed through the stream of fans getting their pictures taken.

Save the best for last and all.

As I waited patiently, Liam leaned in to whisper, “I thought for sure you were a goner with that death glare he gave you.”

“Don’t worry. He wouldn’t be so lucky.”

The line moved steadily on, and it wasn’t long before the line attendant was asking, “Who’s next?”

“That’d be me,” Kai said, stepping past the rope.

“Fuckin’ hell, who let a reporter back here?” Killian, the bass player, said loudly before grinning and pulling Kai into a hug. “What’s up, man? Back for a follow-up?”

“Nah, just a fanboy tonight, like everyone else. And I brought a friend for Viper.” Kai gestured toward Hudson, who stepped in front of me, completely blocking my view.

Ass.

I moved to position myself in direct view of the band so I could make my move as Killian looked Hudson over with a raised brow.

“A friend for Viper, huh? Did you even see the show?” As Killian looked over his shoulder to smirk at Halo, Viper stepped up beside Killian and threw an arm over his bandmate’s shoulder.

“Kai, you troublefucker. You know good and damn well I’m taken.” He flashed the ring on his left hand, the one he’d apparently gotten after proposing to Halo onstage months ago.

Kai shook his head. “You think I want Halo stuffing my balls down my throat? Not that kind of a friend.”

Hudson held his hand out toward Viper. “Hudson Montgomery, senior vice president and publisher at Montgomery Publishing. I wanted to personally reach out to you to let you know we’re interested in working with you.”
