“Yes?” I asked, seizing up William as he bent over my chair, his mouth some inches from my ears.

“I thought it would be best if you knew this. Mr. Colby said today he saw your…” he was thinking about what he would say and I waited.” Your ex wife, Anna at the bank. She was harassing Miss Carter. Obviously, it was a public thing which made her leave in embarrassment.” He pulled away, having delivered the message.

She had told me she was going to the bank to settle the loans and I had received a call from Anna early this morning. My heart tightened in my heart fearing if Anna had harmed her. Anna had a gun, what if she had followed Sam somewhere to harm her. “Where is she now?” I asked lightly. I fought to appear calm, no need to scare everyone.

“Mr. Colby said Miss Carter left before he could approach her but he assured me that she and Miss Anna went separate ways.” He replied, his voice sounding a bit distant in my ears.

I sucked in a huge breath and stood. I excused myself and gestured for William to follow me. As soon as we exited the room. I strode to the elevator. William by my side I asked, “Why didn’t you tell me this immediately and when did this happen?”

He was panting to keep up with my long strides. “It was around 12 pm. Mr. Cole tried to reach you directly but your phone was switched off and you were in a meeting. I judged it best not to tell you right away since it seemed the issue had been resolved. I decided to tell you as soon as I saw the meeting coming to a close.”

I entered the elevator and my gaze pinned him. “Next time, whenever Samantha is involved, bring it to my attention immediately, no matter what. Don’t make this error in judgment again.” I warned as the doors closed. His face was a mask of apology but I wasn’t in the mood to care. I had to get back to Sam soon. I pulled out my phone and dialed her number. It rang but she did not pick. The elevator reached the ground level, I stepped out and swiftly went to the garage. I fought against the panic in my heart. Are you okay Sam?

I drove like a madman home. I had reasoned that my place would be the first place Sam would go if she were in danger. She had not mentioned any friends, so he wasn’t sure if she had friends or if they lived here. I parked at the entrance and hastily got out of the car.

I pushed the large oak door wide open and rushed in calling out her name. There was no reply. I was about to run up the stairs when I perceived the sweet and fragrant aroma of homemade food around the mansion. The aroma was so strong my stomach rumbled in protest. I had not eaten throughout the day at the office. My heart rate slowed and a smile crept onto my face. She was home and preparing dinner.

I turned my steps and walked to the kitchen. I passed the dining room and peered into the kitchen. There she was jet black ponytailed hair illuminated by the natural light seeping in through the window. She looked entranced with her work. She was serving meat with fried rice and salad. She was planning to eat alone on the kitchen island. A cough escaped my mouth and she jerked almost jumping as she looked at me. “Oh God, Jack! You scared me. What brought you home so early?” She asked, a hand gently stroking her chest to calm herself down.

I walked into the kitchen, the tension in my shoulders easing and relief washing over me seeing her alive and well. I reached her and pulled her into my embrace. She was soft and small in my arms but I held her as if she was my lifeline. “I was worried so I came home to find you,” I replied. Saying the word home somehow made what I felt real. I peppered kisses on her forehead taking in the deep scent of spices and flowers on her.

“What happened? Is it bad?” She asked, her eyes filling with worry and confusion. I sought to ease her discomfort.

“Sam, you can tell me at least almost everything by now. I know my ex-wife harassed you today and for that I’m sorry.” I responded, still having her locked in my embrace.

“I know, Jack. But right now, I’m in the kitchen and I don’t want my food to burn. Let’s meet at the dining table and I’ll explain everything to you.” She said, half teasing and half inviting.

I nodded and left the room. I sat on the chair in the dining room for what felt like ages. She occasionally asked if I was okay waiting. For her, yes. She walked out of the room with a large tray which she set down on the table. She served me a generous amount. In moments we sat together eating, occasionally feeding each other with smiles in our eyes. I felt whole and complete by her side. A while later, we were done with the food. Stopping her from taking the dishes away, I did it myself and returned back to the table. The silence still hung between us, pregnant with questions.

“Are you alright?”

“Who is she?”

We both asked in quick succession. Briefly, we smiled and she nodded at me to speak. I took off my jacket and hung it on another chair. I leaned back drinking in the view of her beauty. “She’s Anna, my ex-wife. I thought we had settled things amicably during our divorce.”

“Apparently, you didn’t.” Her voice was tinged with resentment.

“Sam, I never thought she’d do something like this. I’m sorry for what you went through and I will talk to her to keep her away.”

“Jack, I don’t need your apology. I’m not scared of her but what hurts is what she said. I know it’s not true but it hurts. I don’t know how to define our relationship and you are way older than me with so much more power and women at your disposal that it makes me feel worthless. Jack, for weeks I’ve been telling myself that my feelings for you were a lie and I should look elsewhere but it’s so hard around you. I want you around me, every moment and more than just for sex, but to be there for your pains and joys. I think that would be the greatest happiness I’d ever get in my life. But, I’m so unsure. I fear what future I might have with you. I think I may love you and even if you don’t feel the same, just don't play with my heart. Just tell me what you think, good or bad, I will leave here and never appear in front of you again.”

Her words had jolted me. I slipped out of the chair, went to my knees and grasped her hands. They were a bit cold. I wrapped my hands around them, warming them. I looked her in the eyes, “Sam, I’m honored by your affections and ever since I laid my eyes on you, the seed of love was planted in my heart and has since ever been growing. I think I love you too. I want you to disregard all everyone says and focus on me and the feeling in your heart. That’s all that’s true and that matters. I want to be clear about the facts too, that the divorce was final the night I met you.” I kissed the back of her hand, then the palm. I kissed her like she was fragile and precious porcelain. My heart welled up with feelings as I gazed up at her. She left her seat, joined me on the ground, and kissed me. Her lips were soft and sweet with the aftertaste of the food on her tongue. I held her head in place, caressing the soft skin on her face. She shivered with excitement.

I carried her upstairs to my room. She clung to my neck holding me tightly kissing my cheeks reverently. Joy welled up in my heart, my body was hot and aching for her. I felt my heart beating so fast that I thought it would leap out of my chest. As soon as I entered my room, I laid her on my bed. She pulled me to her, making me fall onto her. She ground the hot warmth between her thighs against me. “Sam, you are driving me crazy,” I groaned.

Her eyes were blazing with a fire of desire. “Drive me crazy, Jack. Make me scream your name, my love.” She moaned, voice husky with desire. She said that part so softly I almost didn’t hear it. I hugged her tightly. She moaned pulling my hair. Savage with desire we tore our clothes off and succumbed to the passion burning in our blood.

My eyes flew open and I stared at a glinting blade hovering above Sam beside me. I struggled to focus my attention on who was holding it. The faint moonlight coming from the window was obscured by the curtains but the knife caught its light. “So, you brought her to our bed. You defiled our bed by bringing her here and for that she can pay.” Anna said coldly, her voice dark as an abyss.

“Anna!” I called her name. I had no time to think, she was bringing the knife down on Samantha. I crashed into my ex-wife. My hands went round her waist pushing her down to the floor. She yelled in fury, I felt her arms flailing, hitting me weakly. I was about to restrain her hands when the knife appeared in her hand again. I watched as her fury turned into hate. She screamed incoherently and raised her hand. In horror, I tried to grasp that arm but it went under my outstretched arm. Like a cold hand straight into my being, the blade cut skin and muscle plunging deep into my chest from my back.

The agony almost made me pass out. I could see the smirk on her face. I growled, slammed my head into hers and pinned her to the ground under me. I roughly twisted the wrist holding the knife, and felt something give. She screamed, passing out. The edges of my vision were darkening. I heard Samantha screaming distantly, as though she was a long way away. Wait for me, Sam.
