I chuckled, “Why don’t you check it out?” She looked at me, skeptical. “Do it.” I urged. She extended her hand and opened it. Inside was a diamond-studded ring on a small purple pillow. She was transfixed.

I rose and went to her side. She pulled her eyes away and looked at me. A question was in her eyes. I went down on one knee and held the ring out to her. Comprehension dawned on her. “Jack, you don’t….”

“I do,” I replied firmly. I took her hand and waited to see if she would pull away. She didn’t. “I didn’t expect I’d be doing this again in my lifetime. “Samantha, you gave me another life I would gladly spend with you. I love you with all my heart, and I’ve never been more sure of anything. I want you to be my wife, my one and only. Will you accept and make me the happiest man in the world?” I asked. My heart was thundering in my chest. Though I was sure she loved me, I was unsure if she was prepared to have me as her fiancé.

Her eyes held tears which she let spill as she joined me kneeling and kissed me fiercely. “Yes. A thousand times, yes. I thought you’d never do this.”

I hugged her close and laughed. She held out her hand and I slipped the ring onto her finger. We both smiled, excited by the prospect of a new beginning. “I promise to make you the happiest woman in the world, my love.”

“We’ve come this far and my love has only grown stronger. I would not have it any other way. Thank you for being in my world, Jack.” We kissed again, this time softer and slower.

We stayed on the mountain for hours, watching the snow settle over Salt Lake City. The city looked small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. Nuzzling her neck, I breathed in her scent. It was a heady scent. “I plan to build a home for us here. The view is excellent and I plan to wake up every day to this view with you. The house will be one of many gifts I’ll be giving to you.” Ever since I took her home from her, I was thinking of a way to give her something similar to that back to her.

“Jack, you don’t have to.”

“I want to.” She turned to face me.

“I don’t deserve you.” She said softly.

“That’s a lie, we are meant for each other, and I’ll prove it to you every day. I love you. Now and forever.”

“Now and forever.” She murmured. We closed our eyes as we kissed again, the sun kissing our skins with a warm glow. Deep in my heart I knew I’d found home and the woman I love.

We went back down the mountain and I had enormous joy in my heart, ready to begin a new chapter to my now bright and meaningful life.
