I can’t wait to see Amara, after twenty-four hours it felt more like a week, and I drove straight to the salon.

When I step inside and the bell on the door rings, and everyone looks in my direction. Mar is working on a girl, with foil in her hair. All eyes are on me, but all I see is my woman, who is giving me that needy look of hers.

Stepping up to her side I lean in and kiss her, not caring that we have an audience. “It's been way too long since I did that last.”

“It's been one day.”

“Like I said, way too long,” I lean closer, pressing my forehead to hers. “How’s my girl feeling?”

“Better now,” I notice the smile on her face.

“The two of you are way too cute,” the girl in her chair interrupts us and I glance down to see her looking back at us. “Where can I find one of him?”

Amara laughs, “There is only one Tyler.” Reaching out she places her hand against my chest. “And he’s mine.”

“Are you booked up today?” I ask hoping she will tell me she’ll be free soon.

“I have back-to-back appointments until three.” Disappointment fills my chest.

“I’ll see you tonight at home.” I may have not yet moved all my things into her place, but we’ve already made it ours. The morning after I mentioned us moving in together she told me she wanted that to. I haven’t spent a night without her since, besides last night.

I give her one last kiss and then wave goodbye to the rest of the ladies, hearing a few sighs as I exit the salon.

I walk along the small shops, looking through the window displays, and something catches my eye in a small boutique a few doors down from the salon. Turning back I enter the shop and an older woman from behind the counter looks up.

“Good morning,” she smiles at me, rounding the counter. “Is there something I can help you with?”

Already knowing what I came in for I walk directly to the baby section and pick up the small red onesie I spotted from the window. “My girlfriend is pregnant,” I say looking back at the woman. “We don’t know what we’re having yet, but this could be alright for either right?’

The onesie looks like it has a pair of suspenders on it and in the middle it says ‘Probie’ on the front.

“I think it would be cute for a boy or a girl,” she offers me a smile. “Especially if daddy is a firefighter.”

I look down at my shirt that I am wearing and notice it still says Calloway Fire and Rescue on it.

“I’ll take it,” I carry it up to the register, my chest feeling tight with emotion; To some it may seem like nothing but for me it's everything. This is the first of many things I’ll buy for my child. A child who I had no idea I even wanted, but now can’t picture my life without.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-EIGHT

Amara

“Tyler always was a sweet little baby,” his mother sits back down at the table, after gathering a pitcher of sweet tea. “Rarely cried unless he was hungry or dirty. Always smiling and laughing,” She turns to Tyler's father. “Do you remember that sweet little laugh of his?”

“It was more of an uncontrollable giggle.” His dad adds with his own smile, and it seems the two of them get lost for a few seconds in the memories. I look at Tyler, and he reaches out and takes my hand in his, offering a gentle squeeze.

On our way over here I was nervous. I wasn’t sure how this dinner would go, but being here, in the place that Tyler grew up in, hearing stories and sharing laughs, it is so welcoming.

“We found this,” His dad gets up and walks into the hallway coming back carrying what looks like an oversized basket. “It was Tyler’s, but you don’t have to use it.”

I stand and round the table in awe of the sweet bassinet.

“It’s beautiful,” old school, but the sweetest possible.

“It's a Moses basket, and this blue ribbon can be changed out for a pink or even yellow if you’d like. Depending on what you are having.”

I kneel down on the floor next to it and run my fingers over the soft material lining the inside. “It’s perfect,” I say, feeling my eyes fill with unshed tears. Again with the emotions, I feel like they come at the worst times.
