“Speaking of Christmas, I spoke with Paco. He said AJ can keep the watch.”

“What?” It was just like Paco to one up him. “First of all, we are not rewarding his thieving, lying ways with a six figure watch. And second…”

Alex slumped in a chair. Madison slid onto his lap, stroking his hair and kissing his frowning lips. “Second?”

“I just had the most amazing day. And, got him a video game. And now, Paco comes along—after I’ve barely seen the son of a bitch—and gives AJ his first expensive watch?”

“Aww.” Madison smiled, mussing up his hair. “Does my poor, handsome billionaire not know how to buy his son’s love?”

“No,” he snapped back. Followed by, “Maybe.” He let out a breath. “I’m so out of my element, it’s ridiculous. I just want…”

“What?”

His eyes met hers. “I just want him to feel all those things a son should feel for a dad. Respect. Adoration…”

“Love?”

He nodded.

Her smile coaxed his. “Give it time. You haven’t known each other that long,” she reminded him gently. “Besides, I have a feeling he already feels all those things for you.”

“Why?”

She handed him a note. “I found this in AJ’s backpack.”

Alex held the note tight in his hand. “You snooped through his backpack?”

“Mother-figure’s prerogative. Besides, I had to do something to pass the time while you were shouting the house down.” Madison tapped the note. “He wasn’t keeping it for himself. It was a gift.”

“A gift?”

Madison’s smile widened. “For you.”

Alex opened the note and read:

Up until now, I’ve never known your name.

And I’ve only seen one picture of you.

But I never gave up.

So, for what it’s worth,

Happy Father’s Day

Merry Christmas

Happy Birthday

For the years we’ve missed,

and the ones to come.

Love you always, Dad.

AJ

His eyes welled as he choked up. “The watch was for me?”
