Jordan smoothed the front of her catsuit and moved in that direction. “I’ll just say hi.”

Madison’s hand curled around Jordan’s arm, halting her stride. “Jordan,” she uttered, her voice thick with underlying concern. “You never just exchange pleasantries. What’s going on?”

Nothing.

“Is it serious?”

This time Jordan merely shrugged, her silence alarming.

I swear to God, it’s like playing charades with lethal mercenaries.

Madison turned up the heat, resorting to light-hearted threats. “You know, if you don’t spill, I’ll just be forced to eavesdrop on your chat.”

In response, Jordan just pivoted to face Madison, a knowing grin painting her lips.

Ignoring the question, Jordan abandoned her drained glass and snatched another from the table, this one labelledPaco. She cracked the bottle open and downed it without hesitation.

The unspoken message was loud and clear. Paco Robles, the man who had become a brother to her, and now lead one of the world’s most clandestine and private organizations, wasn’t coming.

And if Paco wasn’t coming, something was wrong.

Not wrong-wrong. Nothing catastrophic. I mean, it can’t be that earth-shattering if Jordan’s flirtatiously chit-chatting about my boobs.

But something was off-kilter enough for Jordan to become a mule, ferrying secrets across Manhattan as if passing notes down the hall in school.

With a challenge flickering in her coal dark eyes, Jordan’s grin widened. “Where’s the kitchen again?” She asked, her voice dripping with faux innocence.

The absurdity of an ex-field agent infiltrating a New York City penthouse, yet feigning ignorance about its layout had Madison’s eyes rolling.

Hell, the woman practically lives in my closet.Case in point: she’s wearing my shoes.

Madison extended a hand. “Right this way.”

CHAPTER4

ALEX

“That woman!” Damian launched into yet another tirade about Jordan. He strode into the kitchen, shoulders tense, eyes flashing with frustration.

Amused, Alex popped a brow and glanced up from the stove. “How’d she slip past you this time?”

“Your guess is as good as mine,” he seethed. “I rechecked all the feeds. Nothing.” He reached for his weapon. “I need to put an end to this, once and for all.”

Alex chuckled. “If that happens, then Madison would be forced to shoot you, and I’d be stuck cleaning up the mess,” he said, gesturing with the wooden spoon towards the simmering pot of sauce. ‘If you’ve got time to gripe, you’ve got energy to stir.”

Despite his grumbling, he reached for the spoon, his complaints morphing into good-natured grumbles. Alex secretly relished Jordan keeping his security staff on their toes. With Madison squeezing through her second trimester, he wanted everyone wide-eyed and alert.

Just as Damian simmered down, relaxing into the rhythm of stirring, the kitchen door swung open wide. Jordan sauntered over with a devilish smirk, planting herself right next to Damian.

“Mmm,” she purred, deliberately pouring her charisma into the syllable. “Got anything you’d like to put in my mouth?” she suggested with an impish grin, pointing to the spoon.

Damian’s grip tightened on the spoon handle, snapping it in his fist. The more he glared, the more satisfied Jordan’s smile became. “You’re lucky the boss says I can’t shoot you,” he sneered.

Taunting him, Jordan lifted a Magnum to his face.Hismagnum. “A little hard to do without your gun.”

Heat smoked from Damian’s head like heat off the asphalt. “It’s either her or me, Mr. Drake.”

“It’s her,” Alex said without hesitation. “But, I’ll double your salary for the rest of your stay.”
