Stassi said something in French. Jordan responded with a laugh. And Alex didn’t make eye contact at all.

Chicken.

If Madison had keys to the car, she’d be out of there. Instead, she smiled. “Yes, which way.”

Stassi tightened her lips, obviously annoyed to have her conversation with French-speaking Jordan cut short. “Past the kitchen and down the west hall.” She waved a hand. “Sterling will show you the way.”

Sterling must have been the name for her butler. As soon as she mentioned his name, he appeared at the door, ready to lead her down the hall.

Madison made small talk as she followed him down the dimly lit hallway, her steps echoing softly against the polished marble floor.

“Have you lived here long, Sterling?”

“Yes, Ma’am. Over ten years now.”

A million questions flashed through her mind. couldn’t help asking. “So, you know Mr. Drake?”

His stride continued calmly. “I don’t believe we’ve ever met.”

A small sigh of relief released from her breath. “Oh.”

“Or his wife.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“But, she seems nice.”

“She’s the best,” Madison boasted. “An angel on earth.” Her thoughts suddenly drifted to AJ. “Stassi must be worried with AJ being gone for so long.”

“I’m sure she’s used to it, miss.” Madison’s heart pinched. What did that mean? The butler stopped, saying nothing more except, “Here we are, miss.”

He opened the door to the bathroom, allowing her to step inside.

The air felt heavy, carrying a sense of mystery and secrets within the walls of the eerie mansion. As she turned a corner, her eyes caught sight of a framed photograph hanging on the wall. It depicted a young boy with striking resemblance to AJ, though the image itself seemed aged, as if it had been captured decades ago. Her heart skipped a beat, a mix of confusion and curiosity washing over her.

Her hand trembling slightly, Madison followed the servant’s lead, the anticipation growing as they arrived at a lavishly decorated bathroom. The room was adorned with intricate marble tiles, a large antique mirror reflecting the dim light. The weight of her emotions and the pregnancy hormones began to take hold, and Madison found herself on the verge of tears. She stood by the sink, staring at her reflection, feeling a swirl of emotions—wonder, fear, and a deep longing for answers.

Madison stood in the dimly lit room, her emotions swirling within her like a tempest. The air was heavy with anticipation, the atmosphere charged with unresolved tension. Suddenly, two resounding knocks echoed through the silence, jolting her from her thoughts. Her heart leaped in her chest as she approached the door, her hand trembling with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension.

With a swift motion, she opened the door, and before she could utter a single word, Alex’s arms enveloped her, pulling her into a desperate, passionate kiss. The world around them seemed to fade into oblivion as their lips met, a collision of longing and desire. In that moment, everything else ceased to exist, and all that mattered was the intensity of their connection.

Madison could feel the raw emotion radiating from Alex, his desperation evident in the way he held her tightly, as if afraid to let go. Their lips moved in a dance of longing, their kiss a mixture of longing and aching, filled with unspoken words and unexpressed emotions. It was a moment of surrender, of finding solace in each other amidst the turmoil that surrounded them.

As their lips finally parted, Madison gazed into Alex’s eyes, searching for answers, for reassurance. She could see the anguish and turmoil etched in his expression, his desperate need to bridge the distance that had grown between them. In that brief moment, she understood the depths of his longing, his fear of losing what they had.

The room was enveloped in a heavy silence, broken only by the sound of their ragged breaths. Madison’s heart ached with a mixture of love and confusion.

Alex’s forehead gently rested against hers, their connection palpable. “Hi,” he whispered, his voice laced with a mixture of longing and trepidation.

Returning his greeting, Madison mustered a sad smile. “Hi,” she replied, her eyes fixed on Alex’s troubled face. Her heart ached for him, knowing that the revelation they were about to face could potentially shatter the delicate balance they had found. But she remained steadfast in her desire to support him.

Alex furrowed his brow, his confusion evident. “Beautiful...and psychotic,” he muttered, his voice tinged with a hint of frustration. “For all the sins I’ve committed, this was the worst.”

Before Alex could utter a word of explanation, the door swung open with a flourish. Jordan breezed into the room, promptly locking the door behind her. She nonchalantly retrieved a flask from her thigh and took a swig, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Alex and Madison stared at her in disbelief.

“What?” Jordan said, raising an eyebrow at their bewildered expressions. “I had to be upbeat and social with a powder-white beehive wig on my fucking head.”
