“Can it transmit?” Alex asked, desperately.

Jordan shrugged. “It’s not a radio. The most it can do is deliver small electrical pulses at best.”

Alex nodded, turning to Paco. “We could do basic morse code. It would have to be something short. Like SOS.”

Paco uttered, “Or,run.”

CHAPTER35

MADISON

“Sounds like he’s about to land.” No sooner had AJ said it than their descent began.

Madison looked out the window, watching as they closed in on an isolated field surrounded by a thick line of trees. She could make out a dark van, and the figure of a man, as well as the very large gun he was wielding.

“Damian is telling the man he’ll get to inspect the merchandise. Just before he kills me,” AJ translated, concern bleeding from his expression.

Madison gripped his hand. “I know you’re scared. I am too. I…ouch!” She flinched, her free hand flying to her chest.

AJ wrapped an arm around her. “Is it the babies?”

Madison clutched the necklace, letting the electrical spikes hit her hand rather than her chest. “I’m fine. I think…”

Her heart skipped wildly. Were they sending her a message?

She concentrated harder. Flashbacks of all those year ago…her and Jack—camping in the back yard—sharing a flashlights as they made messages along the rickety wooden fence. “It’s Morse Code,” she said, a tear flowing down her cheek. “They sending us a signal.”

AJ tensed. “What are they saying?”

Slowly, she said each letter she recognized. “J…R…U…N…”

“J run?”

She shook her head and focused. “A…J…R…U…N…A…J…R…U…N”

“AJ run,” he muttered. AJ’s eyes widened in fear. “They want me to run?” He shook his head. “I’m not leaving you.”

Madison gripped his shoulder, unwavering authority in her voice. “Listen to me. When the door opens, run. Don’t look back. Don’t stop. Just run.”

“No!”

Quickly, she moved the necklace from her neck to his. “I’ll be fine.”

Panicked, AJ pointed to her arm. “You’re strapped to the chair.”

He was right. She’d tried, and failed, multiple times to free herself. All those worst case scenario self help tips were total shit in an emergency.

“I know how to get out of this,” she lied. “I need to distract them.” Braver, she added, “Plus, I used to run track. In high school.”

He popped a skeptical brow. “A million years ago.”

“First of all, I’m not a dinosaur. And second, I’ll be right behind you. I swear.” Another lie. But, she’d tell a million of them if it would save his life.

The helicopter dropped to a landing. Hard. The tie around her wrist snapped free.

She cocked her head. “See?” She rubbed her wrist. “I told you.”

AJ wasn’t buying it “But—”
