“Then what the hell would you need a pigeon for?” Edge asks suspiciously.

“So that I can tie a note to its leg so that I don’t have to talk to you.”

I can hear the snickers from the two men behind me as Edge’s lips twitch. “I know that I’m not exactly great with technology but, I do have a cellphone. You really don’t need a pigeon.”

I’m about to reply when we all hear, “Who needs a pigeon?” I don’t even have to look to know who’s voice it is. It sends chills down my spine that I kind of wish were from fear.

Marrow walks into the hallway wearing his usual jeans, a white shirt that is so tight it shows off all of his tattoos underneath, black boots, and his vest.

Edge lazily leans against the doorframe with a smirk. “Cadie needs a pigeon.”

Marrow looks between the four of us with confusion written all over his face. I’m about to actually try to explain whenever my voice decides to start working again. However, Marrow looks me dead in the eyes, causing my whole body to freeze, even my lungs don’t want to cooperate. “Darlin’, pigeon isn’t exactly something most people want to eat.” His voice is so soft and sweet that I’m almost lulled into a trance, until I realize what he just said.

I don’t know what happens but something inside of me just snaps. “What in the world is wrong with the four of you?” They all look at each other but, I don’t wait for a reply. “Of course, no one eats pigeon. It’s a freaking pigeon!” I growl as I turn to walk away only to swing myself right back around. “That’s it,” I point at all of them. “I am never feeding any of you again.” I look at them and roll my eyes. “I’m never feeding the three of you again,” I amend. “And I’m never going to even start to feed you.” I point to Marrow right before I turn and walk from the hallway.

I’m halfway to the reception desk when I realize that I’m still holding the paper that I needed to give Edge in my hand. I growl out loud, causing Mel to give me a smirk and a raised eyebrow. I shake my head at her and turn my butt right back around.

I walk back into the hallway filled with four large men who are currently looking at me as if I’m a bomb that’s about to explode. It would be comical if I wasn’t so mad.

I prowl right up to Edge and thrust the paper at him. He slowly takes it from me like it’s going to bite him. “This is the list of new suppliers that I’ve found. I made notations about pricing and such. Take a look at them and let me know what you decide,” I say before walking away from them without a backwards glance.

I walk behind the reception desk and plop down into the chair, having run out of steam from my little snit. I actually feel exhausted. I haven’t let my emotions get the best of me like that in a long time, years even. Before hewho shall not be namedcame into my life. Before I was afraid to show any emotion. When I was a normal woman who had no problem putting someone in his place when need be. Before I became the broken and damaged shell of a woman that I am today.

I place my elbows on top of the glass and put my head in my hands. I stare at the collection of different piercing jewelry without really seeing any of them.

I close my eyes and cringe when I realize what I just did. I can’t believe I just yelled at my boss like that. I’m mortified that I yelled at all of them but, Edge more so. The man gave me a safe place to live and a job, and I repay his kindness by yelling at him like some unhinged psychopath.

I can never show my face again. That’s it. I need to move to some hidden location and live in a cave, where I can die of embarrassment in peace.

I can hear footsteps and sigh in relief when the clacking tells me that it’s just Mel. I slowly raise my head and meet her eyes, eyes that are shinning with laughter. FML.

“Sooooo,” she singsongs gleefully while rocking back and forth on her heels like a kid at Christmas. “How’s it going?”

I purse my lips. “I’ve decided to run away and live in a cave all alone,” I grumble.

She tilts her head to the side. “Are you taking the pigeon with you as a pet?”

I groan. “You heard all of that?”

Her snort makes my eye twitch. “Kind of hard not to,” she chuckles, “this place isn’t that big and your voice was really carrying towards the end.”

“I can’t believe I acted like that,” I moan pitifully. “I really can’t believe that I yelled at my boss. Who even does something like that?” I ask mainly myself.

“All of us.” Mel shrugs when I stare at her. “This isn’t exactly corporate America here, Cadie.” She grins unrepentantly. “All of us have given Edge shit at one point or another. It just happened to be your turn today.”

I bite my bottom lip. “Do you think he’ll fire me?” I whisper in horror when I realize he could do that. I would be out a job and a place to live.

Mels maniacal laughter pulls me from my scary thoughts. “Right. Because Edge just goes around firing everyone who annoys him.” She uses a finger to swipe under eyes. “Girl, there would be no one left. You’re fine, don’t even worry about it. Maybe it’ll teach him to keep his dumbass thoughts to himself. Lord knows those men could use to being taken down a peg or twenty.”

“Are you sure?” I ask while still biting my bottom lip.

She nods her head. “Completely sure.” She gives me a mischievous grin. “Plus, there is no way he would fire you when you’re the one looking for a new receptionist. He sure as shit doesn’t want to have to do it.”

I groan loudly. “Thanks for reminding me.” I glance at the stack of papers on my left and shake my head. “How is it that this place goes through so many? They all seem to quit after a few weeks.”

She gives me a blank stare. “You’re asking questions like you’ve never met Edge or Drav.”

I grimace. “They aren’t that bad,” I lie. They are, they really really are.
