Bri’s about to give a reply, that I’m sure was scathing, but is interrupted by her phone ringing. I watch as she takes it out of her back pocket and frowns down at the screen. “Hello?”she says after hitting the button and bringing the phone up to her ear.

I pretend to go back to working on my tablet and Jax just stares into space. We’re extremely convincing that we’re in no way listening in on her phone call.

“How did that happen?”she asks, her voice sounding worried. “Oh geez. All the lights and water? For yourshop too?” I’m guessing it’s Edge on the phone and now I’m even more curious. “Oh, okay, well that’s good at least, you won’t be missing out on work.”

I pretend to change the color on the design as I hear her end the conversation. Jax and I both look up when she goes silent. She’s chewing on her bottom lip looking worried.

“What’s up?” I ask nonchalantly.

“The power and water to my apartment had to be turned off,”shesighs. “Edge said something about the breaker box and having to turn the power off so the electrician could work on it.”

“Damn, how long is his shop going to be closed down for?” Something is tingling in the back of my mind, but I keep my face blank.

“A few days,”shegroans and then shakes her head. “Well, just my apartment, his shop is on a different breaker or line, I’m not sure.Mybrain stopped listening after hearing that I won’t have power or water for a few days," sheshrugs and gives me a sheepish look that makes me want to kiss her.

I’m not sure what Edge is playing at because I’m almost certain that the whole building is completely connected. I catch Jax’s eye and can tell he’s thinking the same thing. This has scheme written all over it.

“Where are youstayin’?” Jax questions, making my eyes narrow at him. He better not offer her a spot at his place.

Bri blows out a bigbreathcausing some of the hair that fell out of her messy knot thing on the top of her head to float around. “I don’t know. I don’t really know anyone well enough to ask for a place to stay," shegives a tiny shrug. “I guess just a hotel.”

“That’s stupid.” Both Bri and I blink at the harsh way Jax spoke those words. “Why are ya gonna waste money when you can stay with someone?”

Bri tilts her head at him. “Um, because I just said that I don’t know anyone well enough to beg for a place to stay?” Her voice is full of questions, probably the same ones that I’m having. What the fuck is Jax getting at?

He gives me a long, slow look, that I’m sure is supposed to convey some sort of meaning, but I have no idea. I just blink and stare back at him silently. He gives me an annoyed look before growling, “Just stay with X.” That’s really not where I thought he was going.

“Wha-what?" shesputters looking around furiously, for what, I have no idea, but she seems to be looking for something. “I can’t stay with Xander.” I’d be offended by how quickly she refused if she wasn’t turning bright red.

“Why not?” My brother huffs and crosses his arms. “You’ve already slept in the same bed as him. Sleepin’ in his guest room should be no big deal.” It’s times like these that make me so grateful for having him as a brother. No one will ever have my back like him. Except maybe Edge. I really gotta find out what that fucker is up to.

“I do have a fully furnished guest room,” I suggest with a shrug, while making sure not to mention that Dee furnished it because she was annoyed that I lived like acavemanor some shit. That woman is a menace, but admittedlya helpfulone. Although, I’ll never know how she finds the time to butt into everyone’s lives. I guess the saying‘the devil never sleeps’is pretty true.

“See, problem solved.” Jax stands from the chair and stretches. “Time to get back to work,”he says before walking out of my office.

Bri is looking at me with wide eyes. “Ummm.”

“You might as well just stay at my place. It makes more sensethanspending a butt load of money on some hotel," I shruglike I couldn’t care less. Inside, I’m doing back flips.

She chews on her bottom lip again. How that thing is still attached is a minor miracle with how often she bites it. “Are you sure?” She couldn’t sound any more indecisive if she tried.

“Yeah,” I say before giving her a grin. “Plus, it would make it easier to pick you up for our date.”

She rolls her eyes and turns on her heel storming out of my office, much like how she came in, and freezes at the door. She looks over her shoulder at me and gives me what I’m sure she believes to be a ferocious glare. “And for the last time,” she growls, “we are not going on a date.”

“We’ll see,” I say quietly to her retreating back. “We shall see.”

****

A few hours later finds me in Edge’s office while Bri is upstairs packing some shit for a few days. We left work early since she needed to be able to use the sunlight coming into her apartment to be able to get around.

Currently, Edge and I are having a silent stare down, neither of us having said a word yet. As fun as this is, I have some questions that need to be answered before a certain woman comes back down.

“What did you do?” Blunt and to the point, is the best way to deal with this bastard.

He gives me a slow blink, his face devoid of any emotion. “What do you mean?” He sounds like a fucking robot, making me one hundred percent sure that he did something.

I raise an eyebrow and lean back in my chair. “Funny, I always thought the whole building was on the same breaker.”
