“Listen to me, you absolute—”

“Hey boys, thought I’d bring over some beers.”

From the doorway, Edge appears holding up a case of beer and smiling like he’s just won the lottery.

“It’s Monday.”

“Exactly. And I heard Cadie, Kealy and Jen are planning to take Dani and Bri on a night on the town.”

Jax and I are both straightening up in an instant, protesting Jen’s appearance in this plan.

“She’s underage!”

“Yes, thank you, Sherlock, we’re all aware. The plan, as it stands, is for Jen to accompany them while they’re getting ready, and to be with them for dinner, but then her grandma is picking her up. Shewon’t be going near thealcohol.”

Sheepishly, I sink back into the job I was doing before he came in.

“Right. Of course. Sorry, Edge. I’m just a bit—”

“On edge,” Jax fills in with a shit-eating grin.

“What did I tell you about that dumb fucking joke, Jax.I swear I’ll rip your head from your shoulders.”

I roll my eyes as Jax leaps up from his spot and races to the other side of the shop to dodge the plastic cylinder that Edge has thrown. Fucking children, I swear. The moment they’re left to behave like ingrates, they’ll accept the opportunity like a gift.

“I’m going to say goodbye to Bri. When I come back, I expect you all to be on your best behavior.”

I leave Jax, Edge and the incoming Marrow to their childish antics while I head over to the main office to find Briella. I don’t know if she’s been brought in on the plan or if she was just employed as a member of the party without warning. Knowing the girls the way I do, I suspect the latter.

“Hey, darlin’, you hear that you’re going to a party tonight?”

Sheoffers me a startled look that suggests, no, she wasn’t told, so I quickly fill her in on the details that Edge just offered me, and she simply rolls her eyes.

“This sounds like the kind of shit Dani would love. Alright, I’ll send them a message tosee if I can maybe convince them that we should stay in and watch a movie. Is that why I heard Edge talking about drinking in the workplace, where there are dozens of dangerous machines that could easily kill one of you should you, say, attempt to interact with it while intoxicated?”

“That was a really long question.” I rub the side of my neck.

“And that was a poor attempt at side-stepping the question,” she grumbles.

“We’ve gotten hammered here loads of times before and — maybe you don’t want to hear that,” I say, noting the steady rise of Bri’s eyebrows. “We’ll be fine. Trust me.”

“Okay. I trust you. Or, rather, I trust Edge to make sure you’re all in line.”

“Edge?” I laugh out loud.

“Yes. Edge.”

“He’s currently throwingmerchandise at Jax, so you can trust him as much as you like, but at the end of the day, he’s still a fucking child.”

“Aren’t all men?”

I lean down and peck Bri on the cheek, like a perfect gentleman, and she puts both hands on either side of my face and holds me still while she sticks her tongue down my throat.

“Excuse me, I was proving that not all men are children.”

“By kissing me on the cheek? Who am I, your Grandma?”

“You’re such a firecracker,” I laugh.
