“Just one minute.”

I jump from the car and run around to her side before she gets the itch to give in to her curiosities and pull up the blindfold.

“Let me guide you.”

“I will, don’t worry. I’d like to note, though, the distinct lack of animal noises. Does that mean the cat is sleeping?”

I make a mental note to consider adopting a cat for Christmas, and then take her hands and start to guide her along the pathway. There are trees that line the way in, tall and in bloom.

“Almost there.”

I’ve never been prouder of myself than I am at this moment. Here’s a woman who was taught not to trust, and yet she’s letting me guide her blindly towards the unknown. This is a huge leap from the nervous woman I met that first time in Edge's shop, when all I knew of her was that she made my pants tight, like I was some middle-schooler with no control over myself.

I’m not claiming responsibility for how brave she’s become in the last year, but I like to think I’ve been a positive influence on her life. I know she’s been one in mine.

“If this is a dead body, I’m going to be so angry.”

If she only knew. But luckily, between Edge and I, we come up with plans that leave little to no incriminating evidence. Such a shame how Jack-y-boy’s car ended up going through that guardrail and over that cliff. I mean, everyone around here knows that you should never drive on that stretch of treacherous road at night…especially drunk. So sad how his car caught on fire like that too. No way to even know if he was burned alive. Nothing was left.

I decide that, if it gets her mind away from that line of thought, I’d best let her in on the surprise now. I untie the blindfold and let it fall away.

“What is this?”

“It’s a house.”

She turns to me just to make sure I can watch as she rolls her eyes.

“I know that, dipshit. I mean, why am I looking at it.”

At this, I smile. This is what I’ve been waiting for the last month for. Ever since the insurance money came through, I knew what I wanted to do with it. I knew I was going to make like a phoenix and rise from the ashes.

“It’sourhouse.”

Predictably, Briella spends a moment processing the details and shakes her head.

“No.”

“Yes. The paperwork went through last night. I put the deposit down a month ago and then the rest of it cleared yesterday. This is our house to live in and build a life in. It’s ours. And no one can destroy it.”

“Thank you,” she says through tears.

And then we cross the threshold and start the first day of our new lives.

Kellie

“Stupid, no good, dead beat, mother trucker.” I mutter to myself as I kick the tiny rocks that are in front of me out of pure rage.

I know that I only have myself to blame for this one. I should’ve known to stop expecting him to be an actual father who gives a shit about his little girl. But dammit, he’s her father, he supposed to freaking care about her and want to see her! My mind screams out at me. I take a deep breath as the emotions begin to roll through my body.

I try to make sense of the situation but, I just didn’t understand it. My father would literally kill himself just to see all of his kids and grandkids smile. Hell, my brother Rocco’s friend Marc even treats his wife Kayla’s four kids like they’re his very own. JJ practically adored the twins the minute that he met them.

So, it really just confuses and saddens the heck out of me that my sweet little girl has a father who cares about everything but her. Literally, even his car, some stupid Corvette, is more important than his own child. He washes it and waxes the freaking thing at least once a week but can’t manage to see his kid for at least an hour a week.
