I shake my head.Didn’t anyone ever teach this girl not to joke about allergies? She’s been poking this bear all night.

“For future reference, do you have any allergies I should know about?”

“I’m not allergic to anything. You?”

“Nope.” I hold out a plastic fork for her.

“Thanks.”

She hoists herself on the countertop and pops the top off her steaming plastic container of pad Thai.

“You eat on the counter often?”

She looks at me like she didn’t even realize it was an odd thing to do.

“Sorry, I’m not used to having people over. Birdie and I always ate on the counter. I guess I never broke the habit after she left. Feel free to sit at the kitchen table I never use, or there’s bar stools around the island.” She nods at the chairs.

“Hell no, scoot over.”

She hides her smile by looking down into her food.

“Wait! First, how much do you weigh?”

“First of all, that’s rude,” I say, hiking my ass up next to hers, we’re practically touching. “Second, these are granite. It could probably hold three of me.”

We eat in silence, side by side. She doesn’t say another word. Watching her wrap those pouty lips around her fork is making my dick twitch. I grip the container of food tighter. I don’t want to take my eyes off her, but if I don’t, my zipper will snap. I take a deep inhale and breathe out.Change of subject, Kucera. Think.

“Want to hear a joke?”

“Sure.”

“How do you make an old lady say fuck?”

“How?”

“Make another old lady say bingo.”

She smiles a little more and even gives a small receptive chuckle. Cracking her hard shell feels like such an accomplishment. I want to pump my fist.

“Reminds me of my grandma.”

“The one that passed?”

“Yeah, she swore like a sailor. AndlovedBingo.”

I nod, and we return to quietly stuffing our faces. Though, this time the silence isn’t as cold. It’s almost pleasant. Comfortable.

“So...” I begin. “When do I get that bread lesson?”

I see the moment she physically locks back up again.Too soon.

“Never. We’re not friends.”

“Wanna settle for frenemies?” This woman is such a pain in the ass.Come off it already.I’m probably wasting my time trying to get closer to her. But I can’t dismiss the magnetism between us, and my brain keeps holding onto the nugget that before she knew I wasHat Trick Swayze, every single one of our conversations had chemistry. That seems to all have gone out the window when my identity came to the surface. But it has to still exist somehow. If only she’d stop fighting it.

FIFTEEN

Iwake up the next morning to a text message. When I grab it off my nightstand, I see it’s from Rhys.
