“The money. I thought it would be a good way to earn some extra cash.”
HatTrickSwayze: For something in particular...?
She hesitates for a moment. “Nope. I just like money.”
That’s it?Ugh, that’s what I was hoping she wouldn’t say. This is what all the guys warn you about when you join. Even the NHL organization offers financial management seminars where they warn us about people hoping to exploit us for money, that includes intimate partners seeking an easy payoff. For some guys, they’re okay with that. They like the exchange of a trophy wife or gold digger. Not me.
“What madeyoujoinFollowers?” she asks.
Truthfully, I subscribed to herFollowersaccount to find a release with something more personalized than porn but less personal than an actual person. That’s not what I type.
HatTrickSwayze: Curious to see what it’s all about.
“Do you follow any other accounts?”
HatTrickSwayze: Just yours. I couldn’t afford to follow anybody else lol
I don’t know why I say that. It’s not like it matters for our situation, but I want her to know I’m not to be considered a source of income for her. The money thing sets off alarm bells in my head. My stepmom was like that with my dad. It put Anna and me in a tough spot after our father died.
“If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy?”
That’s easy.
HatTrickSwayze: Probably buy my sister a house. But she’s had a lot going on lately. I don’t really need much. Maybe a few more private lessons with the Queen of Tarts. ;)
“That’s really sweet. I take it your sister’s important to you?”
I rub the back of my neck. Talking about Anna is tough.
HatTrickSwayze: Yeah. When we were kids, we were close. We grew up playing hockey together. Then when I went off to college, she sorta got left behind. I regret not being there for her more.
She takes a few seconds to read through my text.
“That’s a lot to put on yourself.”
HatTrickSwayze: Yeah, I know. It’s just hard. What people in your life are important to you?
“Probably my best friend. She recently reunited with her parents—long story—but witnessing her reconnect with them is like watching her get the happy ending she deserves. Family stuff is hard, man. I have a mom and stepdad that I love, but they live on the West Coast, so I don’t see them as often since I’m in the Midwest now. My grandma was really special to me too. She passed away a couple of years ago. She was feisty and a big part of my life when I was little.”
That must be where Freya gets it.
HatTrickSwayze: I’m sorry she passed.
“Thanks. She was a pretty cool lady. I want to be as cool as she was.”
HatTrickSwayze: I’d say you’re pretty fucking cool already.
“Do you have a girlfriend?”
There’s a change of direction.
HatTrickSwayze: No. Why? You interested? Lol
I’m not offering. I have too much going on in my life. Casual is all I can handle, and even then, I prefer a screen between us.
She chuckles. “No, I couldn’t do the long-distance thing. I’m too needy.”
