“When did you hear that?”

“Few days ago, my buddy’s one of the investors.”

No. No. No.

How on earth am I going to break the news to her? She will be heartbroken. There’s no way she’s got the capital to compete with whatever Citra is putting in on their offer.

Feigning boredom, I toss a puck up in the air and catch it.

“Oh yeah, I’ve seen that place. It’s a dump, Citra will probably get it for a steal. Your buddy mention how much they offered?”

He turns around and looks at me. “Why? You have something you want to share with the class, Kucy?”

“Nah, I just like their beer. Thought maybe I could invest in something like that too. Just curious how much money I would have to put up.” It’s half true. I do like their beer.

“I’m sure they would be down for some connection to the Lakes. I’ll get you in touch with my guy.”

Conway pipes up from across the aisle. “Do it. I’ve invested with a couple local start-ups and it’s been great. Property is always a good investment. I’ve got a place in Hawaii I rent out year-round, it’s terrific passive income. Someone else manages it, I don’t have to do a thing.”

I hate it when lies turn into bigger lies and start involving more people. Now I will probably get stuck listening to some business pitch or going out for drinks to network and “discuss opportunities.” Fuck that.

“Thanks, man.”

“For sure. Hey, been meaning to ask, are you still hooking up with that bartender or is she available?”

“She’s not available.”

He turns around and kneels on the seat.

“Oh, I see how it is. Does she fuck as wild as she looks?” He’s trying to get a rise out of me. He should know by now she and I are involved.

Out of respect for her, I keep my mouth shut, but I can’t help the smirk that curls on my lips.

“Oh, shit, you must really be getting it good. Lucky bastard.”

“We’re seeing each other.”

“For real? Like exclusive?”

My gut twists. That’s a loaded fucking question. I wish we were truly exclusive, but that’s not true. Hundreds of men are seeing Freya. I remind myself some things are mine. I know what her face looks like. I know what it feels like to have her trembling under me. I know she bites her lip when she’s turned on. The way she sounds when she comes. Those are mine. And above that, I have her heart.

“Yeah.”

Lonan laughs in the seat ahead of me, and he mutters something likefuckin’ knew it.

Next Lonan turns around and looks down to face me. “You guys getting serious?”

“I mean, kinda. More serious than anything else I’ve had before.”

That’s an understatement. It’s never been like this with women. They’ve always been there, standing on the sidelines and trying to get my attention, but I’ve remained focused. Freya’s the only one that’s made me look, the only one who could pull my focus from everything else in my life. She’s given me a life outside of hockey. Being with her brings balance to my world. She doesn’t see me as a hockey player, she sees me as a person—and that’s something I’ve lost sight of over the years. My worth comes from more than my athletic abilities. The things I feel for her...

“Kucy...” Lonan drawls all sing-songy.

“Huh?” My mind is too wrapped up in her. There she goes stealing focus again.

“Be good to that one. I like you, man... but if shit hits the fan, I’ll be forced to take her side. She’s practically a sister-in-law to me.”

Wanna have a new brother-in-law?The intrusive thought pops into my brain and partially stuns me. A couple months ago marriage never crossed my mind. But a couple months ago, I didn’t know Freya. Not that I’m anywhere near ready for a proposal. But she makes life so fun, I wouldn’t be opposed to spending a significant portion of my life with her by my side. Ihopeshe becomes a permanent fixture in my future. She’d make a good partner.
