“Haven’t you?” He grinned at me, and I rolled my eyes, smacking his chest lightly.

“Not in the slightest.”

His grin widened at the lie. “Well, it was better than anything I ever imagined.”

“You imagined this?”

His brows cinched together. “Nell, have youseenyourself? Of course, I imagined it. Trust me, my thoughts didn’t stop at just going down on you in a dressing room.”

I felt a blush rise into my cheeks, and I was suddenly very glad that the room was as dark as it was.

“Well,” I fired back. “If Ihadthought about it, which I’m not saying that I did.”

“Of course not,” he said quickly at the pointed glare I shot him.

“But if I had, those fantasies wouldn’t even have come close to the real thing.”

I didn’t think it was possible, but somehow his smile grew even wider, and I was afraid it would crack open his face.

“Just what I wanted to hear.” He winked at me, and I rolled my eyes.

“Don’t let it go to your head.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”

I moved, finally deciding that I had enough of the heels digging into me, and kicked them off, sending them flying over the edge of the bed.

“I’m surprised you actually kept those on,” he mused, eyes following the shoes as they fell.

“Honestly, I forgot they were even on until just now. I might have been a little bit distracted.”

“Maybe just a little.”

He smiled at me again, but this one wasn’t filled with pride or joking like the other. There was something softer inside this one, something that had me grinning back and leaning forward to press a soft, gentle kiss to his lips.

“If someone would have told you all those years ago that you’d find your way into my bed, would you have believed them?” He asked, and I got the feeling that this wasn’t exactly a rhetorical or joking question.

“No,” I shook my head. “Of course not.”

“Was that so unfathomable?”

“You were an ass when we were growing up, Blake,” I answered, keeping my eyes locked on his. “I mean, you’re still a bit of an ass. But then you were really, really a jerk. One of the worst.”

His brow furrowed. “I wasn’t that bad.”

“You absolutely were.” I scoffed. “You ran around with a silver spoon dangling from your lips, and you made sure everyone knew it.”

A strange look crossed his face, one that I couldn’t quite place. But he began speaking before I could question it.

“You do know that you were from the exact same circles as I was, right?” His voice was defensive, and I got the feeling I had struck a nerve. “You went to the exact same private school that cost the same amount of money. And you weren’t exactly there on a scholarship.”

“Neither were you,” I snorted, his defensiveness making my own flare up as I narrowed my eyes at him. “You, my brother, and all your little friends terrorized people that didn’t come from wealth. You thought you were all so above them. It was bullshit, Blake. Can’t you see that?”

“Yes,” his voice was agitated. “Now I can, of course, because I’m an adult. But we were kids back then, Nell. Most kids are assholes.”

I shook my head. “Not like that.”

Blake blew out a frustrated breath, and his fingers had long since stopped tracing the delicate lines along my skin.
