Now, we were the best in our fields in NYC, and I kept him on retainer. It wasn’t a bad feeling at all, to be able to employ your friends and pay them what they’re worth.

“So,” I began. “What’s going on?”

“I have good news,” Jourdan answered, and I could hear the smile through the phone.

I didn’t trust it, though. After the way my week had gone, I didn’t want to get my hopes up at all, and I narrowed my eyes even though he couldn’t see me.

I waited for Jourdan to continue talking, but after a few seconds pause and he didn’t, I let out a frustrated sigh.

“Well, are you gonna tell me or are you gonna make me beg for it?”

“I could always use some begging, big boy,” he replied, laughter lacing the edges of his words.

“Shut the fuck up and tell me already, Jourdan.”

“Fine,” he laughed. “You’ll have keys to the Queens property in three days.”

My mouth popped open in surprise, and I was suddenly able to feel my heartbeat in my head.

“You’re shitting me?”

“I’m not. It’s final. They accepted the bid two weeks ago, but I was worried they’d back out. So, I didn’t want to tell you until everything was complete. It’s yours, man.”

A smile, fierce and proud, tugged at the corner of my lips as I collapsed back into my office chair.

“Three days?” I asked, still unable to believe that my day had been able to turn around this much.

“Three days,” Jourdan confirmed. “This is a big step, my friend. The first step in that passion project of yours that you’ve had dancing around in your brain since you first started getting involved in real estate. So, pop some champagne, maybe go out, meet a girl. Celebrate. You deserve it.”

“I’ll drink a whiskey and then go to bed. I’ll celebrate with a run in the park in the morning.” I countered, still smiling.

“Well, I can’t say I’m surprised. But listen, Blake, I gotta jump, there’s some other things I’m working on. But I’ll send all of the details to you over email.”

“Yeah, sounds good. Thanks.”

Jourdan and I disconnected, and still I couldn’t stop from staring slack jawed out at the city.

In the distance, across the glimmering East River was Queens. And as I looked at it, the lights that were dancing there seemed a little brighter to me than they had a few moments ago.

Time to start my passion project, indeed.

CHAPTERTHREE

NELL

I leanedover the counter in my tiny bathroom, staring at myself in the mirror as I brushed a final layer of mascara over my lashes.

It had been three days since I found the notice on my door about the building sale, and we hadn’t heard any news since.

Rather than worrying about it, I had opted instead to set up a first date with a man I’d hit it off with on a dating app.

“You know,” Lex’s voice drifted over to me from where she sat on my couch. “I think you should go with the slinky green top. It looks great with your hair, and your boobs look amazing in it.”

“So, no dress?” I asked as I took a step back from the mirror, giving myself a final appraisal before it was time to pull on my clothes.

“Not for a first date. You should break out the little black dress on, like… the third date.”

“Noted.”
