MIA

Istaredatmylaptop screen for what felt like hours, my heart lodged in my throat.

Reid was right.

The stress of keeping our secret had been doing enough damage already; who knew what would happen the longer I kept it?

Still, the thought of telling Vitoria that I was doing something illegal left an awful taste in my mouth. I didn’t want her to think little of me, but I also didn’t want her to think it was okay to grasp at straws when she was in trouble.

I’d already managed to keep her out of the darkest corners of the city back home.

With a sigh, I called her, hoping I didn’t look as defeated as I felt. I couldn’t even look at myself on the screen. The call connected and her face appeared on screen. She shot me a wide smile before settling back in her seat.

“Irmã,” she sang, readjusting her earphones. “How's everything going?”

People moved back and forth behind her, and her earphones cut out enough of the surrounding noise that she didn’t need to yell.

“It’s going good,” I told her, forcing a smile. “Are you still on campus?”

“Yeah, I have two more classes before I’m done.”

“Okay, I won’t take too much time then,” I said through a shaky breath.

“Don’t be silly.” She frowned. “What’s up?”

I inhaled a staggered breath and blew it out. Better to rip the Bandaid off. “I got married.”

Vitoria’s eyes went wide and she just about swallowed her bubblegum in her shock.

“What?!” she squealed. She jumped at the volume of her voice and glanced around quickly, covering her mouth with one of her hands. “Sorry, butwhat?”

With a hesitant smile that felt more like a cringe than anything else, I glanced down before continuing. “I got married,” I said again. “To Reid.”

Vitoria’s expression didn’t shift at all.

“It was the only way to stop Immigrations from deporting me,” I explained, my stomach twisting in discomfort. “So she suggested we get married; that way I wouldn’t have to start the process all over again.”

“That’s a little illegal, though, isn’t it?” she whispered, and I could barely hear her over the sound of people clamoring behind her. I assumed she was in the cafeteria.

I chuckled in embarrassment, heat flooding my face and I was glad the camera couldn’t pick it up. “It is, technically,” I said. “But I hated keeping it a secret and I wanted you to know.”

“I’m assuming I have to keep this from Mom?”

“You are very correct,” I deadpanned. “Please don’t say anything. If she asks, just tell her there was an error and they fixed things on their end, please?”

“Okay, I won’t say anything,” she said. “I don’t think Mom really gets your situation anyway. We don’t need to come up with some elaborate lie, or anything.”

“Thanks, Toria,” I said. “I appreciate it.”

“I think it’s so badass.” She snickered. “This is the most illegal thing you’ve ever done!”

The unease that crawled through me set my teeth on edge, but Vitoria didn’t need to know why.

I wasn’t sure I could ever tell her why.

“Why are you here, again?”

Reid’s disgruntled question shook me from my thoughts and I looked up at her and Alex.
