“Oh, fuck,” I murmured, my stomach dropping. “If she’s been moved into critical care then that’s very serious. Do we have a gap this afternoon?”

Mia nodded and opened her iPad to hand over to me. “I moved my last meeting of the day to tomorrow morning, and your meeting with Warren was canceled,” she explained. “We can go and visit her during visiting hours then.”

“Perfect,” I said, handing her iPad back to her. “We’re going to need to get HR on this – we can’t have Clara managing both positions while she’s still learning her own.”

“I’ll get in touch once I’m back,” Mia said. “And I’ll meet you at the hospital.”

I nodded and she turned to leave, pausing to look back at the table. “Bye, everyone!” she called. “Enjoy your brunch!”

“Bye, dear!” Taylor called. “Join us next time.”

The rest of the table waved goodbye as I sat and downed my virgin mojito, wishing it was dirty.

“What was that all about?” Elliot asked suggestively.

I sighed. “One of Mia’s assistants has been in the hospital for a while and she’s just been moved into critical care.”

The mood around the table turned cold.

“Shit, I’m sorry,” Hayden said, and her sentiments were echoed by everyone else.

I nodded. “I’m meeting Mia at the hospital later on, so I’d better get going.”

I got to my feet, not oblivious to the heavy glances they all exchanged as I left.

My only concern was making sure Mia didn’t take on more responsibility than she should.

Chapter 11

New Routines, Same Us

MIA

IstaredatReid’soffice door, the frosted glass hiding whatever Reid was up to from me. Her excited cackles, however, told me exactly what she was doing. That, and she’d been excited for weeks about the latest beta version of a game she’d helped bring to life.

I glanced at the schedule that lay open on my iPad and sighed. “Reid?” I called, getting up to knock on her closed door. I got no answer.

Obviously.

I let myself in to find her on her feet with a VR headset covering most of her face.

“Mia?” she said distractedly, her fingers curled around the controllers. “Is that you?” Her headphones lay on the sofa a few feet away.

“Does anyone else just walk into your office?” I countered, getting comfortable on the sofa behind her. I knew how absorbed Reid could get in her beta testing, and that I was likely in for the long haul.

“You did knock,” she pointed out, and I leaned around her to get a better look at the large TV on the wall.

“So youdidhear me.” I smirked.

She shrugged and continued her game, swinging her arms around a little wildly. “I was engrossed and I knew you’d come in anyway.”

“Point taken.” I chuckled softly. “So, which game is this?”

“The MMORPG we’re showcasing tomorrow,” she explained, settling a little more easily into the gameplay. “It’s in its very final stages so I asked the Dev Team to send it up.”

“This is the open world RPG, right?” I asked, resting my chin in the palm of my hand to watch her play.

She hummed, entirely focused on the boss fight in front of her.
