“Your mom is suspicious of the two of you, right?” Alex mused, picking up her fork again and stabbing at her pasta. I nodded. “Then why don’t you give her some solid evidence to get her off your back?”

“I married Mia,” I hissed. “How is that not solid evidence enough?”

“Because anyone can go and get registered, duh,” she drawled, rolling her eyes. “You did.”

I grumbled under my breath, hating that she was right. “Then what do you propose?”

“You and Mia need to get more physical,” she suggested, her face bright with the idea of it. “Kiss her in front of your mom, make itnauseatinglyobvious. Oh! You could even fuck so that she overhears. That’d send her packing in a heartbeat.”

“Alex, what the fuck?” My face burned, and I couldn’t bring myself to even think about what she’d just suggested. Mia’s face swam to the front of my mind, the expression she wore just before I kissed her. I pinched the bridge of my nose between my thumb and forefinger with a sigh.

I had no idea how to fix the mess we’d landed ourselves in.

Chapter 15

Slipping Into Comfort

MIA

Chewingonthesideof my thumb, I eyed the door to Reid’s office. Things between us had been strained, to say the least. Not uncomfortable, but there was suddenly a brand new wall between us that wasn’t there before the incident with her mother and her ex-wife.

And I thought I may have been the one to haul it up.

The ride to work was as silent as the rest of the week had been. At least, whenever we managed to catch a break from Reid’s mother. Mrs. Voss had insisted that we eat dinner together like a ‘real family’, something that Reid had snorted at.

I braced myself and walked into Reid’s office. “Sorry to intrude,” I said softly, peeking around the door to find her sitting behind her desk.

She lifted heavy eyes to me and smiled. “You’re not,” she said, and there it was, the awkward stretch of tension, pulled taut between us. “What’s up?”

“We should go through our schedules,” I said, holding my iPad up in answer. “We have a busy day and I don’t want us to be late.”

“Sure.”

I sat down in my usual seat, once too close and now too far. “In about a half hour we’re meeting the VR execs that want to collaborate with us for their next range of technology,” I said, scrolling through our combined schedules. “I asked that Ms. Pierce be present as she may have some insight to offer.”

“Good idea,” Reid agreed. “At least she has more experience in the tech field and she’ll spot any red flags we might miss.”

“Exactly.” I smiled. “Then you’re meeting with Warren and his team to finalize the investment in the women’s-only tech startup. And then you’re free for lunch.”

“Correction,” she interjected. “We’re having lunch together.”

“O-okay,” I said, hating myself for the little stumble in my answer. I added it to the schedule and continued.

The rest of the day consisted of back-to-back meetings that would only end at around five in the afternoon. Not bad, considering we’d been stuck in the office for far longer.

“Awesome, I’ll meet you back here for lunch then,” Reid said, getting to her feet to prepare for her day.

I did the same. “Is there a particular restaurant you want me to make a booking for or are we eating in the canteen?”

“God, no.” She snickered. “Don’t worry about it, I’ll figure it out.”

Reid walked out before me, no doubt heading to the barista on our floor for coffee before the meeting. I walked out a little after her and came face to face with Clara.

“Are you guys okay?” she whispered.

“What do you mean?” I asked, hoping I didn’t sound as guilty as I felt.

“You just seem… off.” She shrugged. “You’re both normally super in sync but it’s like you hit a speed hump or something.”
