“I’d like that.”

“Want to check out the art district with me next weekend?” I ask. “Local artists are going to be painting murals around the ViBe Creative District and we can watch them.”

“That sounds awesome.”

“Maybe we can check out one of my favorite restaurants afterward.”

“What type of cuisine?”

“It’s a surprise.”

“I love surprises,” she says, smiling.

“Then it’s a date. I can pick you up around eleven.”

She cocks her head toward the door number behind her. “You know where to find me.”

“I sure do.” I step away from her. “Good night, Claudia.”

“Good night, Trevor,” she whispers, her brow furrowing. She slips her key into the lock and pushes open the door, disappearing inside.

I should have kissed her but it’s too late for that now. I want us to take things easy this time around. No rushing. No one’s leaving in the morning for some faraway land.

Besides, I’m not the same man she met that night. No, the man in his place is an imposter, and I’m a fool to believe I can fake it all the way.

But for now, I will.

Chapter Four

Claudia

I don’t know what I expected but it certainly didn’t involve Trevor stepping away and just saying good night. What happened to a kiss… or am I simply expecting too much?

But as I close the door behind me, I can’t deny that I spent the most wonderful day with someone I like a lot. There was no pressure to be a certain way but be myself.

And maybe that’s what this is all about, us getting to know each other, taking everything from the beginning. After all, a lot can happen in a year and a half. Learning about King’s death certainly proves that point.

It also explains the change in Trevor, how reserved he seems now compared to the night we met. There’s nothing like real life… or being real.

My phone rings and I see my cousin’s name on the display. I answer the call as I make my way into my room. “Hey Gabe, what’s up?”

“Just catching up. I couldn’t get back to you last week when you texted to tell me you’d arrived at Leigh’s,” he says. “How’d she like the ristras?”

“It’s hanging in her kitchen right now,” I say, chuckling. “It might end up staying there until I start cooking because she doesn’t even know what to do with it other than put it up as a decoration.”

“It works either way,” he says. “How was the first week of your internship? Was it as difficult as you thought it would be?”

I slip off my shoes and rub my feet. “My clinical instructor is pretty tough, but she wasn’t chosen as one of the best in her field for nothing. But I am excited to be there. It’s my last internship, remember?”

“You’re on the home stretch.”

“Are you coming to my hooding ceremony?”

“Is the moon round?” He laughs. “Of course, I am. In fact, I’m flying with your mom. Didn’t she tell you?”

“I completely forgot.” And the only reason I forgot is because I still have Trevor in my thoughts. I take a deep breath and focus. “How’s the clinic expansion going?”

“It’s going,” he says. “Who knew expanding a practice would take so many permits and meetings before anything can happen? But it’s happening so I’m not complaining.”
